Default Help with a fastener

Am getting ready to rebuild the climate control unit and have run into a fastener type I don't know how to remove without destroying it. I remember bending the crap out of them 25 years ago on an old Corvair and would like to not have that happen again. The piece in question is a kind of cap on the end of a shaft. The shaft has a groove about a 16th of an inch from the end. The cap has a hole in the center which fits over the end of the shaft and then the whole cap slides down the shaft wedges itself in the groove. Around the hole of the cap are cuts in the metal radiating out towards but not reaching the edge creating what could be called a bunch of little tabs (looks like a washer with teeth). These tabs can be bent back allowing the cap to be removed from the shaft but getting the cap back on and the little tabs bent back towards the center far enough to secure anything is unpleasant when you have room. Not much room around the climate control unit.

Sorry for the long explanation. I can't post pictures. Does anyone know of an easy way to remove and re-install these little critters ?

Thanks for your help!!

I hate those little things! I've had trouble with them before, they do no more than make a semi-secure pressure fit anyhow. You might take one into a Chevy dealer's part counter and get a replacement. Once they are remove and the only way I've gotten them off is with needle nose plyers, they are no good to re-use. They go on one way and secure with those little "tabs" you were talking about and back pressure when you try to pull them off destroys their holding power. If you are forced to try and re-use the one you got, the best you can do is flex the tabs back in beyond horizontal so that when you slide it back on the shaft, the tabs bend back to horizontal with enough pressure to grasp the shaft.
Best of luck.
this may help - I think what you are looking for is a type of "push Nut.

If not it's pretty close to what I think you are descriping and may help you locate what you need through a fastener website.
