I found out from my build sheet that my 77 had a V65 build sheet option. I am stripping my car down to glass and I found where the holes were glassed over. My question is I want to put a new rack back on the car. Are they all pretty much standard to where if I reopen up the factory holes will the aftermarket chrome rack use the same holes or should I leave them filled and get the new rack and try aligning it with the old plugged holes?
Wait and get your new one first...Luggage Racks were a dealer installed option and they did vary in mounting hole configuration.
You may also want to look at the options for the luggage racks too. Some have studs on the rack and were used to hold the T-Top mounting brackets so you can pull your t-tops off and throw them on the luggage rack really easy and hold them down with the strap.
I don't know much about 77 but my 69 has a factory rack. At least when the 69s were built, if you ordered a luggage rack, it was on the build sheet and on the window stick, but it was in a box in side the car. The dealer installed it after it was delivered from the factory.
My original rack started to show some surface pitting, so I looked for a reproduction. I looked at chrome and stainless racks but I never found one that fit exactly. When I would measure from one mounting point to another, it was always off by 1/4 -3/8 of an inch, so I knew they would not fit my mounting holes. So, I pulled my original luggage rack off and took it to Librandi's In Harrisburg and had them re-chrome my original rack. Best thing I ever did! When I got it back, the holes lined up perfectly. Plus the chrome was better than the reproduction racks.
So, don't touch the holes until you find the rack that you want. After you get the rack, put it together and then lay it out on the rear deck. Mark the location of the new mounting points then pull the rack off. I would then do some sanity measurements to ensure that you have it perfectly centered.
