I finally got tired of having my door always close and hit me in the leg. So I decided to replace the door spring, I found the reason for the problem still attached to the hinge, and I thought that this would be an easy 30 minutes fix. It took almost 90 minutes, with a beer break included to get this part on.
The special tool may have helped matters, but being the tight wad that I am, I decided to make my own special tool out of some extra metal I have laying around. Making 2 of these tools also took about 15 minutes of work, but I did save $6.00 in the process...or 1 six pack however you want to look at it.
Anyway...its in, and it works. The key to this is PATIENCE and lots of it.
Ahh yes, I remember when I did mine a couple years ago, got it on a couple times and it poped off when I went to close the door, then I realized I had to push doen on the pin to set it in place, took me about an hour. . .amd I had the TOOL!!!!
15 min fix. A little tip, after you get the spring lined up and in the bottom hole, go in from the side with a long screwdriver and pull up on the top of the spring. Be careful not to scratch the paint though.
I did the driver's door spring last Sunday and it went in pretty easy. I followed the instructions on corvettefaq.com and also had the installation tool. If I had known what the tool looked like in advance I could have used my small crowbar instead and saved the $, but it sounds like spring replacements are a pretty common task on C3's so the tool will probably be used more than once.
