Default need help please

hi guys
i was replacing the aftermarket POS crappy radio a previous owner put in and the antenna cable fell apart in my hands at the end where it plugs into the radio.
How difficult is it to replace this cable. Is the cable run behind the seats and along the back accessible or do I have to rip the entire rear carpet out??
The car is a '78

If you are handy with a soldering iron and there is enough slack in the cable, you may be able to repair it. I fixed one last week. Otherwise, the cable runs under the carpet all the way back the left side to the antenna.

I used a soldering iron, heat shrink and tie wraps when I replaced mine recently. It may be a "bubba" way of doing it but it's a easy solution until I can get around to re-doing the interior.

yep, I can solder but have never done an antenna cable before.

can you tell me the steps to take?
there isn't a whole lot of slack but I can try to make do with whats there if replacing the cable is that much of a PITA.
Worst case senario is I screw up and still have to replace it so I can't be in any worst shape than I already am.

Barry, simple repair clean out the connector. if the wires are long enough restrip the cable. the center conductor is where the solid copper wire goes. the outer shielding goes to theouter part of the plug just be sure that the sheild and the solid copper wire do not touch

Barry,
If the wire appears to be a bit short you may want to try just fixing the damaged end and picking up a small extension wire. It is kind of like an extension cord for antenae wires. Most places that sell car radios should carry them or probably someone like radio shack. I has the male plug on one end and the female on the other and I believe they are about a foot or so long.
