Default Question on AC system

I need to recharge the AC system on the car I've been working on. When I put everythjing back together I changed out all the O Rings and i'll get the system vacuum checked but I need to figure out what to do about the freon.

I found one place around me that says they still have the original R12 but of course they want a fortune for the stuff. They quoted me over the phone about $350 to recharge the system.

I'm really trying to avoid having to convert the system over to R134 if there is any way at all possible to not have to do that so i'm not looking for "convert your system over" suggestions.

A friend suggested other stuff that I think is called "Freeze 12" ( maybe referred to as R12A?)
It's supposed to be able to be used as a direct substitute to R12 without needed to convert the system and it's a LOT less expensive than finding original R12. It's suppose to blow 1* or 2* warmer than R12 but still blow colder than if I converted to R134.
My biggest concern on it though is that I THINK (could be wrong) is that it's propane based and I've heard I should avoid any type of propane based fill for the system.
Anyone have any experience with this stuff good or bad?

anyone have any original R12 they have been hoarding but are willing to sell me 3 or 4 pounds at a reasonable price?

freeze12 is 80% r134A and 20% r12.

i don't think or atleast i have not read anywhere where it is propane based.

personally, i'm going to do the r134A conversion. i want to set the car up for something that will be available in the future and that i can do myself.

if the conversion dosen't go well, i can easily switch back to r12 and i'll just worry about availability later....

Freeze 12 is not propane based and is not flammable. I buy it for a buddy of mine who uses it in his old 79 lincoln. He swares by it but It costs about $18 dollars a can and you still have to have an a/c license to purchase it. You are better off with R-134 cheaper and easier to buy and actually works pretty good if installed properly.IMHO

Barry,

Last year I replaced all of my o-rings along with my top hose, vir, and compressor. I charged mine with 134a and it blows 39o at the center vents on a 85o day.

I switched over....I had to replace the AC muffler assembly and did a search for R12 and came up empty....other than one guy who's price was crazy.

tell me about it - the one guy around here who has any wants $75 a pound!

the only hope I have left is my sister-in-law who is trying to find about 20 pounds of R12 that my stepbrother had and was hoarding for himself. He died in Sept and she said if she finds it I can have it but she already went thru his warehouse once and couldn't find it
