Okay guys, here's the deal. I want to upgrade the sound system a little bit in my 72 coupe but don't really want to spend much money. As much of an audiophile as I am, I would rather put the money elsewhere if I were going to spend a terribly large amount. I just simply want 4 new speakers (two 4x6s for the dash and then two other speakers to replace the old Pioneers that are sitting in the back now) and a good cd player - no amp, no subs or anything like that. I'm only looking to spend about $350. I would REALLY like the head unit to have an audio-in jack so I can hook up my iPod directly instead of using my iTrip like I do now...suggestions? Anything and everything is appreciated!
Check out Crutchfield, there are several manufacturers making head units with 2 ***** reminiscent of old style radios, and many have built in amps decent enough for 4 speakers and auxilary input for you ipod. The Vette parts places have speakers for the rear. You'll just have to find the combination of parts that meets your budjet. Crutchfield is excellent to deal with, very helpful, dealt with them for 20 years.
I still have the factory stereo head, and I installed Pioneer speakers in my dash but I dont remember the part number. And I found some Vette kick panel speaker brackets at a swap meet for 2 additional speakers. I have a vert, so rear speakers don't work for me.

You can have your factory radio re-done to 180 watt, and add any feature at extra cost. (CD-Satellite radio-iPod-MP3-Tape, $25.00 per)
Just another option for you.
I hope to all who's holy your not referring to Custom Autosound and their retro reproduction radio's.....
I've heard nothing but CRAP about their products.
Unless your looking for audiophile quality, which your not, any name brand head unit will work well for what you want... Sony, Pioneer, etc... As mentioned before, Crutchfield is a great place, excellent customer support and decent prices. Just take a look around and see what has an aux input for your price range. Most aux. inputs will be RCA style connectors, but its a few dollars for a mini-jack to RCA adapter.

Great. I've been looking around Crutchfield and I'm probably just going to go off what I can afford that has gotten good reviews. I definitely want that aux input and not many of the cheaper players have it, so I think that's kinda gonna be the limiting factor...thanks for the advice guys!
Where are there speaker in the dash? I only see speakers near the kick panels...?
I don't have any speakers in my kick panels. I have two 4x6s, one at each corner of the top of the dash; they're held in so that they face directly upwards.
I went with the kenwood Corvette knock off in the ecklers catalog, It works great and I have a remote cd changer behind the seats. For the iPod I use the cigarette lighter adaptor with the FM transmitter built in, NO CABLES, a very good thing, nice and clean.
I tried the fm adapter for the ipod too - didn't work well - I ended up going very low buck - low tech, my head unit also has a cassette player behind the faceplate - I plug my ipod in thru a cheap cassette adapter, cost about 3 bucks and there is no radio interference. BUT there is that one little wire...
Since I got an IPOD with the FM receiver, I rarely listen to anything else. Before that I had 9 hrs of classic rock on one MP3 compact disc. A couple a cheap tips. You cut your center console for a single din, grind down where the ***** were, fill in with some bondo and paint flat black. Also you can mount some 3 way 4" speakers behind the seats on the side. A relatively inexpensive system that sounds almost as good as my flowmasters.

5.25 comps in doors or kicks. Some 5.25 can be mounted in the kicks properly (solidly mounted w/ a plate) w/o mods to the kick panel. While one would normally want the tweeters near the primary front speakers, tests showed the dash location can work very well for tweeters.
Kenwood eXcelon mask CD & 5.25 lightweight dual mag components. Don't run it much- the engine makes enough music for me.
My simple, but effective system. Took alot of care to instal while I was restoring my car, but it turned out to be a waste of time because I barely even use it!

I did the same thing, only with a two channel amp to power the speaker bar mounted in the back of the coupe. The Kenwood Isn't that bad if you amp the puppy.
