Default My 1970 need your help

Guys. I need some help on a question. Are the heads serial numbered like the block? I know my block is original in my 70 L46. I bought it in Dec and had it shipped to Germany where I am stationed. Well, the third time we went out for a drive my #8 piston got touchy with the exhaust valve and bent the valve. I have the heads off the car and took the heads apart. Turns out who ever put the roller rockers on the car forgot to put the damper spring in it after cam break in. I suspect. Labor for a valve job in Germany runs 550 bucks. How do I tell if my heads are also original to the car? I know they are 186 casting heads with 2.02/1.6 valves. I would like to put the same heads back on or find a set of rebuilt 186 heads that are date coded the same. I found a set for $699 on the interne. Is this a fair price. How much does an average valve job cost with parts and labor. What would you suggest? Thanks.

186 heads would be considered correct for a 1970 350 hp engine. Check the casting date of the heads and compare them to the casting date of your block. Those dates should be close.

Have a 70 L-46. The numbers you describe are correct. Your problem could be something else. I had a bent exhaust valve on #5 a fewe years ago. The problem was the guide. I had let oil past and caked up for so long the valve got hung up. Had new guides put in and problem solved. No damage to anything internal. I had also suspected the oil was leaking through the intake side via a bad in take to head seal. (all to common problem) I would do pull the heads for R&R. Check the piston tops for the burnt oil sign and possble damage for that valve, (thats how it more than likely got bent)

Check the date code on the heads,(in the center by the large "GM"). This code should be resonably close to your engine build date.(on the block, right side just forward of the head on the block deck pad.)

No serial number. Just a part number and a date. Dates aren't checked for NCRS judging. Not sure about other types of judging so you have to decide how much effort $$ you want to spend on finding so-called "correct" dated heads.

Thanks for the help guys. I know if I order a set of heads from the states they could take a while to get here because of the weight. Is $699 too much for a set of rebuilt 186s? There is a set on ebay. If anyone has a set for sale let me know. I just don't trust the machinists in Germany with my American parts when it comes to machine work.
