I replaced the speakers on my '73 as they were rotted. They are on the top of the dash on each side near the end. The dash does not have to be removed to replace them, but a lot of other parts do. The originals and replacements were 4x6.
If you had the "AM FM Muliplex" aka stereo radio - you would have 2 speakers in the dash - 4X6's and two in the kick panels - again 4X6's. They were garbage the day they left the factory. The only thing they were designed to play was strings, like Montevani or some painful elevator music your grandmother still listens to on her Kitchen RCA.
I have a vert, and I have done 2 sets of high end 4X6's. I also resealed behind the kick panel speakers, as you will probably find some rust in the pocket. I sealed it with swamp cooler paint. I have Dynamatted the dash, and doors, will be doing the rest of the car soon.
In the rear I did 2 8" subs, tight fit, but I can still use the three doors! - They are downward firing subs, better thump in a vert.
As for the dash, I have an Alpine AM FM CD DVD flip out screen, and run a coupla Rockford Fosgate amps. Alpine also makes a real small amp that fits in the glove box - thats a real 1000 watts. Spendy but way small.
Now when someone pulls up to me playing "Driving Dirty", this old man can thump his Montevani or Herb Alpert.
I disconnected the dash speakers in the 70s. (not suitable for music)
I just recently got around to front speakers & did some experiments.
The kick panel loc. works very well. While one would normally want the tweeters near the primary front speakers, tests showed the dash location can work very well for tweeters.
Kenwood eXcelon mask CD & 5.25 components in kick panels.
