Some years ago, there was a company that came up with this product that you apply to remove scratches on glass. It was even advertised on tv showing the removal of worn out wiper scratches on windshields. Can anyone remember this?

Yea I remember seeing it, I think JC Whitney still sells it. I have also seen the work. Yes it will remove SOME scratches, but it also introduces swirls, will make you dizzy lookin thru them.

Yeah, I've seen some of the handiwork of these DIY glass buffing kits. They only come with 1 grit and it's too big for finish work. Any glass shop should be setup to do this stuff though. I'd check your yellowpages. It's not an expensive thing to have done.
Whenever I paint a car and do the buffing, I make sure to put polishing compound on the windows and buffing removes a lot of small scratches. If it is a bigger scratch you can take it to a glass shop and the have a fill in process they use for nicks on the windshield. It also works for side windows.

They have it because they will attempt to remove scratches from the ones they sell that come with minor scratches.
there is an acrylic buffing compound that has 3 stages of grits and a polish....... that might work and not tooo harsh... even though acrylic is softer than glass, i'm sure it'll help out a bit...... i'll see if i can find the name
Nothing I've tried has worked on the "deeper" scratches..even those "glass" guys can't fix it...but I use Rain*X Glass Care 2000...it does a good job on the teeny weeny scratches....it is a glass cleaning/polishing compound..you can feel the grit between your fingers..
I have used Eastwoods "Glass Polishing Compound" with great success, but it only removes haze, discoloration, and tiny surface scratches.
Eastwood does sell a glass grinding kit that removes deeper scratches, but warns that distortion may occur is not done correctly. Also checked into having the glass ground at a shop. They wanted $75 an hour with a minumum 1.5 hrs per side. NO THANKS!!!!

i had the marks that steel makes when the rubber on the windsheld wipers are gone you could not miss it when you looked at the windsheld.
i got that kit ecklers sells and when to town on it took four hours work and made a big mess but they came out ,you cant see them now and its clear you have to go slow and use lots of water.

Good to know about the Eastwood stuff; my dad was going to try it on his Jaguar's windshield since there's some pretty heavy scratches and pitting. If it leaves swirls, he's not going to be happy with that...
I bought the JC Whitney kit , for my '55 Chevy. It took a lot of patience, but it got out some pretty deep windshield wiper scratches. Cost $29.95, saved my windshield...
Actually; "back in the day"...we used regular ole chrome polish(ie. the Turtle wax brand that was brown) for glass...that was the ticket back then (and mostly by-hand polishing)...
With todays small and compact cordless drills; its EZ...it wont remove gouges, but all scratches will go, calcium, lime, and other hard water deposits/stains will go....be careful next to old rubber trim, gaskets and seals.
Old glass is different from today's glass...chrome polish really doesnt work on newer glass as well.
There was also a product called "Allisons 20/20 Bubble Polish" it was made for helicopters since most of those didnt have windshield wipers.
You will also notice "Rain-X" (and the like) work better on old glass than new...again; its the materials in glass these days.
Chrome polish may take a few tries at first, but after that; its as easy as keeping a good wax job on the car.

Eddie: couple of days ago, I also purchased Eastwoods... Haze & light scratch solution, (still in transit) any suggestions on its use? Thanks heaps! Muddy
I have heard lots of folks getting there windshields repaired but the side windows are tempered glass. I have not heard of anyone removing scratches from them.
