Let's get started with trying to figure out just what year T&T column that you have in your Vette.

First of all, is the head of the column full round? Or does it have a bulge on the left side and the turn signal lever can be moved toward you to operate a dimmer switch?

If it is full round, then there should also be a lever sticking out of the steering column under the hood (down under the brake booster). All Corvette T&T steering columns from 1969 through 1976 were the same, with a lower lever. That lever should be connected to a cable that connects to your transmission. If you have a manual trans, when you shift into Reverse, the cable should push the column lever all the way to the UP position. If you have an automatic trans, the cable should push the lever all the way UP when you shift into Reverse.

The lever needs to be all the way UP in order to be able to rotate your lock cylinder all the way to the OFF-LOCK position so that you can remove your key.

If your steering column has the bulge on the side. Then the 1977 through 1982 T&T steering columns are basically the same and do NOT have a lower lever. There should be a small finger lever next to your ignition key and lock cylinder in place of the lower column lever or cable from the trans. You need to trip the lever in order to rotate your lock cylinder to the OFF-LOCK position and remove your key.

Now, the skipping that you describe is a whole different story.

I strongly recommend that you download my papers that are located at www.corvettefaq.com in the Steering section. Click on "his excellent articles" and then click on "Corvette Steering Papers".

You should take the time and download all three T&T Disassembly and Repair papers as well as the three Disassembly and Repair Pics. There is also a T&T blowup picture and an installation drawing. They are very complete (although quite long and wordy).

The Corvette steering column was designed to be resistant to theft. Unfortunately, this makes it somewhat more difficult to service. But I assure you, it is a task that an enthusiast can tackle.

Answer the above questions, check out your backdrive cable from the transmission to the lower column lever (if so equipped) and download the papers.

Lastly, it never hurts to take lots of digital pictures as you disassemble the steering column. They will help enormously in reassembling the column and you can post pictures with specific questions.

Jim
