Hello, friend turned me onto this car and would like to educate myself a bit before I jump into buying this car. It is a non numbers matching 1969 427/400 horse four speed. Originally white with power windows and A/C.
Car now has a 1967 427 in it with an aftermarket intake/carb. Not sure of head castings. Mechanically runs fine. It needs work but seems like a decent start to get into a 69 Vette. Frame is beautiful, work it needs is in nose area of car and a few other spots in body. Interior is decent and other than aftermarket radio and speakers in doors not all cut up.
I am interested in the car, just wondering what a fair price is for this car. I know this is a vague description but it's all I have right now. Any idea what the car is worth ??
Well, I'm not sure of any documentation. Can anyone give me some areas I can look to see if what I'm looking at is legitimate. Been into Pontiacs and Mopars but never a Vette. Is there specific areas I can look to tell me the car is what it is ?
Does the vin give any other info other than 69 Corvette ? Will the vin numbers be found anywhere else on body/frame ? Cowl tag ? What and where should I be looking for ( casting number wise ) to tell me what year this engine/heads are ? Car needs work but is also not a major project.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I am interested in the car and believe it would be a cool one to be cruising around in.
A 400 HP car is the 390 hydraulic BB with 3x2 tripower carburetors instead of the Rochester 4 barrel. 400 HP cars are pretty rare, with or without AC. They only made about 2000 400 HP cars in 69. Probably only a few hundred coupes and convertibles had AC with the 400 HP option.
There are many "clues" as to whether it was an original BB car, BUT there is nothing in the VIN or trim tag that will tell you what it was.
If the car still has the gas tank sticker, that will tell you the options.

Not quite sure what you mean by legitimate. You already know that it is not a "numbers" car, that the engine is proported to be a a 67 - 427 (check the numbers on the block). So the collector premium doesn't apply. Is the title clean? (Not a salvage?) How much rust particularly in the birdcage? Go through, or have someone do it for you, the standard engine tests (compression etc). Don't know if the 69 had an emissions sticker immediately aft of the master cylinder but that has engine info on it if it exists.
Absent the build sheet on the top of the fuel tank you really can't tell. At the risk of being an SA unless you are planning to restore the car to original I question if it really matters too much what the car was.
It would seem that it's more a function of what is it now.
