Default Need help with windshield install on 74

Getting ready to have the front and rear windshields installed on my 74. and I have some questions. I have reviewed the excellent windshield replacement article on the CorvetteFAQ site but I still have some questions. The center of the windshield rests on a rubber pad that attaches to the bracket the where the wiper arms rest. I don't have that rubber pad and it is not vailable in any of the catalogs. Can anyone send me the dimensions of this piece or is it just a flat piece of rubber? Any suggestions of what I could use in its place, or do you think I can get by without it? The article also talks about rubber winshield spacers. Again, this is a part I can't seem to locate. Is this something that the windshield installer typically brings with them? As always, sugesstions are much appreciated.

Most of my problems with this car come from having not been the person who took it apart. Its the little parts that are killing me on this car. My next nightmare is the coffee can and box full of bolts and parts that used to be the door lock, door opening and window parts.

Thanks

The rubber strip is just that - it's about 1/8" thick and fairly firm. I would put something in there.

Your installer should have 3/8" spacers with him. As noted many times, it's all about the depth of the glass - when it's all done, the trim pieces should just contact the glass all around. If he uses the 3/8" butyl tape with urethane sealer, the tape will provide the depth and stability and allow the glass to be "pushed" in if it is too high [with the trim pieces on]. If he uses just he Urethane / spacers, then he will need at LEAST 4 spacers around the perimeter of the glass.

Finally, it is BEST to be sure you find someone who HAS installed early Corvette windshields (as opposed to someone who says "sure I can do it" - but never has) to do the job. There are lots of horror stories about the butcher jobs that have been done to compensate for a bad install. When I did my '69, I discovered the side trim pieces actually had another set of holes drilled in them to compensate for a poor install somewhere in it's past life.

Thanks PWS69 for your reply. I am following your advice on the installer. I got the name of someone from County Corvette who is a large Corvette restorer in the SE Pa. area. I really learned a lot from your article and pictures on the Corvette FAQ page. Thanks for posting it!

Good luck. Mine came out nice .. .since I reminded them several times
that I was concerned with installed height. The guy musta been like WTF ...
as I left both my 70 and 75 AIM open to the windshield page
and also left some rubber blocks that came with my butyl tape kit.
He ended up using the blocks ... not sure on the AIMs.
