Can anyone tell me what this gunk is? It is mainly on the firewall, but it's in the windshield compartment too. I was thinking it was some kind of heat shield, but why in the wiper compartment and the upper firewall? I want to paint the engine compartment, but I havt to get this crap off first. Thanks for any input.
Above is after I scraped a little away with a screwdriver
Then next two are of the wiper compartment. You can see where I scraped some away.
a close-up. Looks like the surface of another planet! Corvanius...
it's a sealant that was sprayed on.
Yes, it doesn't look good and it's a royal PITA to remove and if you do than chances are your car is going to leak like a sieve in the rain and when you wash it......
Unless you plan on never getting the car wet including washing it I'd recommend leaving it.

Dang. Well, how about putting on a fresh coat so it doesn't look so shi.. crappy? Anyone able to point me in the right (cheapest) direction?
I have the same problem with my car. I'm very interested in hearing suggestions about this too. I will probably take the engine out of my car this summer and It would be a prime time to clean it.
I was thinking maybe one idea to get rid of the holes that let water would be to lay under the dash and let someone with a flashlight shine against the firewall. I was thinking that if you did this at night you would be able to see all the holes and would be able to plug them up with something. Any more ideas?
Carpet adhesive remover takes care of it, I used it, removed that stuff from everywhere (also in the back of the car) re caulked the seams and resprayed
I used a rubberized undercoating spray in the wiper compartment....I was chasing a leak, but ended up making it look much better as well in there...you can get the can of spray undercoat at any auto parts store...gonna use it in the wheel wells next...

the upper side of the firewall is caulked onto the rest, look inside the gutter..it's a real mess in there the way the factory did it. I removed all that anc sanded it all, then glued it back together and made sure it's clean looking.

I like this idea. I am going to pick up a can and a wire brush at the depot, test a small area, and report back.
a wire brush will gouge the fiberglass, I used a thin and sharp putty knife
Nice, I knew a wire brush might not be a good idea, that is why I posted. I plan on recoating, but why damage the fiberglass with a wire brush if it's avoidable?
Man am I glad you posted this. My engine bay and windshield wiper area look exactly like yours. My thoughts were that some previous owner had a small engine fire.
The way that stuff is applied makes me think it is some kind of aftermarket material. I've never seen a car from the factory that had it sprayed on the labels and windshield wiper mechanism. Maybe some sloppy dealer did it...
I sealed all my seams with black urethane sealer .... fantastic stuff ...
the black roofing sealer. It takes a couple days to harden, but stays flexible
and it is TOUGH.

Twin you the man! That adhesive remover took it off like the stripper on my 21st birthday! Nice man, thanks for the advice.
I pained on the adhesive remover, let is sit for 2 or 3 mins and it wiped right off. In the tough spots, I painted it on, and used a pressure wash to blow it off. I wouldn't recommend doing this without taping off the body of the car; one drop will eat through the paint in a matter of seconds. Since I have that peel-away paint, it didn't bother me to get a couple drops on the body. Getting her sprayed next year.
Here are a few before and after pics.

At this point I ran out of stripper, but there is only a little left, and should take me only 1 beer to finish.
