I just put a new edelbrock 1406 carb on my '80. It runs fine at idle, but when I hammer it it starts to sputter reall bad and lacks power. What do I need to adjust? (sorry, I'm not a mechanic)

CHRIST!!! You're messing with a carb and you have no idea what youre doing ? Best advice would be, Please take it to a mechanic. A Carb is too complex a device to be messed with.
I wouldn't have the guts to open it myself. (I'm not a mechanic either)
cheers.
I just had the same issue and it turned out to be a slack in the timing chain...other symptoms include an Idle the is never reguler "surges"...and of course sputtering at WOT..(wide open throttle)
I replaced the timing chain and everything went away.....I hope I am wromg in your case... timing chains are no fun.
How did it run before you installed the carburetor? What is your timing setup? What other modifications does the engine have? What does the Edelbrock manual say about this? What did Edelbrock tech service say?
Assuming that the ignition timing is correct, there could be several reasons for the problem. It could be the accelerator pump needs to be tuned (probable cause) or the off idle circuit is too lean or the main metering is too lean or the secondaries are malfunctioning.
Why did you change the carburetor in the first place?
