Does yours have the plastic fan shroud? What a pita. I'll save you some grief, when you finally work it out of there (take the fan off, belts, pulley) cut the thing in half vertically. I made a bracket that goes on top to hold it firmily back in place once easily reinstalled.
You will probably have to play around with the top rad. brackets, as they want to hit on the welds, instead of inside of them.

Put a DeWitt "direct fit" in My 79 a couple of months ago and used
original cap with no problems. I agree with MsVetteMan, the top rad.
brackets are a little hard to get over the welds on the tank, but I
still think buying the rad. was some of the best money I have spent
on My 79"money pit".

If you put in Dual SPAL fans, you don't need a shroud. We just install the fans in my son's 75 and they look great. There's a lot off room in there w/o the shroud.
