What engine do I have.
Can anyone tell me what engine I have in my 76. The numbers I found are 3970010 on the back of the block and VO229CMD-121558897 on the front near the passenger side head.

3970010 - 350 Block casting number used from 68 to 80 with either 2 or 4 bolt mains.
VO229CMD-121558897
V is the Flint engine plant
02 is the month of engine assembly
29 is the day of engine assembly
CMD in 72 denoted a 350 2 barrel with THM 350 with A.I.R./Smog CAM(Calif), NB2 Not sure if the same held true in 76.
121558897 should be part of your VIN if its the original engine.

From what I found the CMD is as follows:
Car type
1974 CMD 350 tur 350, taxi - 2 full size
1980 CMD 305 LG4 H 155 4 G
It is not a corvette engine. Check www.nastyz28.com they have lots of great block info.

I kinda knew it wasn't the original motor when I realized it was suppose to be painted orange and mine is blue. But I didn't know enough to check before I bought it and the guy said it was the original engine. I took him for his word. 
I paid $6500.00 for it and I liked it at the time. It needs an interior and some other things but it is paid for.
