The other day I was just cruising home when my buddie in a v6 Tacoma, slightly lifted, cruises up next to me. he keeps goosin it tryin to get me to race him and at first I just smile and think, do you really think a Yota like that will hang? So I just leave it in gear and hammer it (doing about 35 in 3rd w/ 3spd) and ironically, the whole time I was accelerating, he was right next to me. once we hit about 65 I started pulling but from 35 to 65 I felt so bad that a lifted Tacoma was hanging side by side with me. I shouldve just shifted into 2nd...maybe even 1st if it would catch

The other night a Ricer Honda CRX kept folowing me, so I headed toward the airport...my TH350 was in 3rd when we turned the corner to the airport service lanes (known to keep off the street for racing) he pulled into the next lane, and I floored it without kicking it down all the way into 1st...he pulled away and I smelled his nitrous and race fuel from the rear....
He already had the momentum and rpm's built...I didnt.
He slowed; and he and his buddy were laughing...they shook "the race finger"...I pulled into 1st...almost over-revving...he nailed it and I pulled away and chirped 2nd and kept pulling away.
I prevailed and he no longer wanted to race.
We got to the runway service entrance and I put my window down and asked if he wanted to try again from a dead stop...he said his nitrous was empty...but was kind enough to tell me where to get race fuel.
I was embarassed at first...knowing that my stock 79 cant keep up with much of the ricers anyway, and a good portion of the modern day vehicles.

I would give you a hard time but the current motor in my Vette is so pitiful it wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a cats A$$. I may make the trip 75 miles up the road to Summit racing and fix the situation this weekend.

Hey...I am fully aware of modern technology...I am gonna stick to racing smoking Vettes and Rustangs...lol
I have a friend with an NSX. He won't race because I scared him..telling him it's at least 60% driver, and that I like to kiss doors when I am drag racing..
so if a ricer starts to pull away on you, sneek into their lane a little...the chicken will surface and they will let off!
btw,,,you need RPM's to accelerate...never assume you don't..
It was about 20 deg last Dec, after twighlight. I was taking my daughter to pick up a pizza. My electric windows weren't working so I left the roof off, the heat radiates through my floor and your not cold even with the heat off. Cold rubber and asphalt don't make for good traction and a 38 year old steering box does not make for good handling. Anyway one of those turbocharged Suburoo's, tricked out some, starts with me in moderate traffic. Sideways in 1st, let off, sideways in 2nd, let off, sideways in 3d, let off, he's weaving I can barely keep the nose pointed in the right direction. Needless to say, he said goodby, believe it or not, it was not by much. Sometimes power slows you down, and having raced motocross as a kid I gotta say, now don't hate me, some of these ricers are on-to something. But I'll still go sideways anyday.
I was sitting at a stop light one night when a VW beatle came up in the next lane. I didn't even give it the first serious thought until the light turned green, then all I heard was squealing tires as he began to leave me behind. Boy was I impressed. I cought and passed him but the lesson was learned, never take anything for granted!
i remember volkswagon beetles tripping the lights before camaros and novas at the 1/8 many years ago too, but how cool is that? i took my drivers test in a beetle, but it's not what i choose to drive. if i had to drive a beetle now, i'd just go ahead and put an electric motor in it and get it over with! i'm sort of glad folks are working on the "ricers" tho, even if they are sometimes a little misguided.
I felt guilty when I smoked em away from a Honda Civic. I gotta give the guy credit, he stayed right with me when I tried accelerating away from him at 60mph (I didn't downshift of course...). I'm more worried about blowing the engine in my L46 by missing a gear or pegging the tach into the orange/red zone AND getting arrested OR worse hurting myself or somebody. There is a racetrack not 20 miles away and I may venture that way for some bracket races this summer. Just to see what I can do with the L46 in essentially stock trim (Lars-rebuilt carb/distributor, stainless chambered exhaust out the back and K&N air filter...). It's getting warmer outside and I'm getting the bug...
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
The ricers can smell a stock or near stock C3, when you get your C3 fixed up to point where you easily blow them off the road they don't come around anymore
this is why i chucked the L-82 for a stroked 454 and hopped up trans and converter. i'm hoping just the sound will scare off most of 'em!!!
I had a friend in college that had a similar theory. Along with a 396 (in a 67 Camaro) he added a Pete Jackson "noisy" gear cam drive. When anyone asked, he simply said, its my 6-71.
Mine has enough of a cam with headers and flowmasters to hopefully make people think twice. Too bad it's still a basically stock L-82 smogger, so it's all bark and no bite.
Want a safe place to go nose to nose against a ricer ? Wanna see how fast your car really is ? Want to compare it against Mustangs, Camaros, Panteras, etc. ?
Try Open Road Racing ( openroadracing.com ) There are two events coming up; July 13 to15 and August 24 to 27. Nissan brings a factory car, has finished once in five years.

Absolute truth...I would get people trying to race me all the time when I had a stock engine and mufflers on my 80'...about a year ago since I got my new engine/exhaust setup and I'm pushing over 400 hp which makes it sound like a demon from hell, they've stopped coming around...all cars! It's really incredible, now I NEVER get people trying to race me...must be the sound of the car and shaking of nearby objects...kinda upsetting after you put all the money in the car, and now you got no one to show it too!
