Default Opinions: Tires

The 80 is coming back from the paint shop soon and I need to make a decision on tires. I have Rally wheels. I am deciding between keeping it original with the 225 70R15's but see that a lot of u have switched to 255's 60R15's. Also I like the Goodyear Easgle GT2 but see a lot of BFG on your cars. Opinions either way appreciated, thanks Jim

Your '80 has more room inside/front of the fenders than earlier models so 255-60-15 should be no problem at all

I don't think there's a huge difference between BFG, Goodyear or Firestone.... these 15" tires are all pretty much junk compared to modern 17" tires but the raised white letters and rallies look

The 60 series tires will corner better than the 70s, but will have a harsher ride.

I like the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s in 255/60/R15. Definately not junk. Better than anything that was available in the late 70s. I think Pirelli makes a Scorpion tire in 15" sizes, check TireRack.

How you intend to use your car is the biggest factor in tire choice. For an occasional driver with a sporty attitude I think you're right on with the Goodyear GTIIs or B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A. These two models come in a really great selection of sizes for a 15x7 or 15x8 wheel. I like the look of a 255/60 on the back and 235/70 up front. All these tires are well under 100 bucks thru the TireRack and the RWL are cool! My .02.

Just replaced the old Goodyears with BF 's T/As. After complete front-end rebuild and these tire (w/alignment) I couldn't ask for more. The ride is quiet, smooth and handling is fine. It does matter what driving conditions you like but for all around performance I cannot complain (tirerack.com has good pricing).

I always ran the BFG TAs.
I've never had a problem, but they aren't the greatest on wet pavement.
For the same $$, The Firestone Firehawks look like a better all-around choice.
If I were shopping for 15s, I would go Firehawk Indy 500s.
Check the customer ratings at tirerack ... #1 last I checked.

Thanks for the input. I have settled on the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 255 70SR15's. Seem to be the best choice for my driving habits.

Default Typo ?

May be a typo, but you need 255/60 not 70. 255/70 would be way too tall.

No it isn't a typo. Thanks for catching that. I will have to call the shop in the morning and have them change the order. Thanks again Jim
