Default 1975 Shutting Off

I have a stock 75 and after I drive it for a few miles it shuts off and won't start. After it cools down for a few hours it starts back up again. Any ideas as to why its cutting off ?

when it dies, does the motor turn over with the key? If so I would suspect either fuel or ignition. When it dies, check for fuel in the carb, putt the air cleaner and open the throttle to see if it squirts gas, if so, go to next step.
Check for ignition, pull a plug wire, stick a screwdriver in the boot and hold it close to a ground and check for spart while someone turns the key.
My bet would be ignition module, if I had to guess

I have a 75 also. Had the exact same problem last year. Replace the ignition module and dont forget the dielectric grease on the bottom of the module.

Your local Chevy dealer or auto parts store should have one.

Replace the module. Either the dealer or NAPA. Echlin brand from NAPA are very good. Dont forget to put the dielectric grease under the module.
Let us know how you do.

When my 75 was new (less than 10,000 miles), it started doing the same thing as yours. It was the module as others have sugested. In the earlier year GM ignition systems, that was a common problem. I had the same problem with a 77 Z-28. Good luck.

I have an 80 with HEI. My distributor was missing at one of the plug posts (low spark). It was running rough and hesitating, the black button that goes between the coil and the rotor spring was completely burnt out. I replaced the cap and rotor with the blue streak units. When I did this, I made a mistake. Here is what I did:

On the cap, there are 2 single connections, one for tach, other for power. There is also a 3 wire connector, the first and 3rd connection go to basically the same 2 as the singles (they are the 2 wires going to the coil) The middle wire of that connector connects to a small plate that simply goes to the steel part underneath the coil; Some kind of ground, I think. I forgot to install this little plate, but the car ran for about 3 miles after this installation then completely shut off. I replaced the cap and rotor back to the old ones after I realized my mistake, but it still does not start. Now my car won't start with the old or new units. There is no fire. There seems to be 12 V going to the coil. Any ideas?

If you go to "Search" on this board and enter the word coil, I think you will get some good information on this problem. Don't know if you have changed anything on your car but I had a relatively new coil that caused my car to have the same problem. Put the right stock AC/ Delco coil on the car and the problem went away. Good luck!
