Default Transmission clunk

Has any one felt a clunk on the downshift on the automatic and not acceleration on the upshift. The clunk comes in on the upshift when I let up on the accelerater at the shift time. This is a 1980 L82 Thanks, Dan

my 400 seems to do that all the time.. replaced the mount, checked the u-joints and greased them up.. still does it.

I just chose to live with it

I agree that this sounds like U-joints. Get underneath and see if the U-joints have grease nipples. If so grease them up. If not, try spraying a good penetrating lubricant on them.( Temp. fix only!!) While you are down there, change out the rear-end fluid and add a bottle of GM Posi-additive on the refill. This will rule out the Limited slip clutches as the culprit. The bottom line is that if U-joints are starting to fail, don't hold off on replacement, unless you don't plan on travelling faster than 30mph. Nothing nastier than a full lock up or throwing a half-shaft at speed. Its not a big job, just had mine done the other day. If you are mechanically inclined and have all the tools, there are several forum threads on replacing them yourself.

Good Luck

Sounds like the "Differential Cushion" is worn out.
Its the rubber mount on the front of the Differential.
If that is shot the front of the Diff moves up and down as torque is applied on upshift and downshift.

It could be your "CLUNK".

There is an upper and lower listed at Mid America.
