Default Horn Button...

I have a 1980 vette. I took the stering wheel off to tighten up the star bolt for the telescope. Now, who's ugly sister do I have to date to get that little rod to sit on the spring so I can put the horn button holder back on.
Everytime I try the rod jumps out of the spring and falls down inside the steering wheel. I have cussed louder than the horn so I left it off. I would like to know the trick.

if you are talking about the the contact that sits in the spring just put a little grease on the pin and put inside the spring it should hold in place so you can screw the contact plate on. Gerry

The grease will probably work but if it doesnt try closing up the end
of the spring a tiny little bit, then the end of the pin will fit tight and
not fall out.

Mine has a little plastic bushing that fits in a j-slot and holds the pin and spring in the lower contact body. Once the upper horn contact is bolted down, I used a small screwdriver to push the pin down and under the little horn contact arm.

Ok...I've stopped laughing now. Seriously, I have been there and you just got to be creatively patient and cuss a lot. You'll get it back together.

Good Luck

Here's the trick for that...my friend owns a gas station and when he fixed my horn he had the same problem. He then went inside and got something he called "dummy putty". Worked like a charm. It's kind of like plumbers putty. Take a little, very little bit of it and put it on the end of the spring. It will stay there and as far as I know no harm will come to your car.

I've had mine fully apart and have never really had a problem putting it on. You need to put that plate over the top; hold it in place and thread the screws.
