There is an old dealership where I live that was recently bought by a man who is really into classic cars which is right down the street from my friend's restaurant. So today we rode down there before he had to go to work and went into that place. In the show room there was a 66 chevelle SS, a 68 GTX w/ 440 6 pack, a 69 z28, a 69 camaro w/396, 2 68 l89 vettes one was orange and one was yellow, one 89 vette with 600 miles, and an 80 with 4500 miles. All the cars were spotless! It was really awesome to walk in there and hear the stories from the man. He had grey hair and said his first car was a 66 chevelle SS.
When I walked into the shop I was surprised to see that both of the 68s were big blocks and I was very surprised they were l-89s. I do not know very much about these cars but it was very interesting to see the different things that indicate how you could tell the car had those aluminum heads. He explained the * marking that looked like a "snowflake". It had a W in the middle of it too I think. Both cars had been meticulously restored and were simply incredible. He told me that the orange 68 was a little more rare because that particular burn orange color was only offered that year ( Don’t know if that is true or not). It had "tobacco" colored interior which I thought was the prettiest color interior I have ever seen. It was VERY dark brown, almost black and looked awesome with the wooden steering wheel and flat black console plates.
A few other "honorable mentions" were some cars he had in the back. The one I thought was the neatest was a 67 cornet 500 that was bought out of north Wilkesboro NC and was believed to be a moonshine distributing car. It had a 426 hemi and a 4 speed. The rear leaf springs had 10 leafs in them, the back seat was altered so the trunk had a HUGE cargo area. Also, if you have ever seen the steering wheel you know that the horn ring goes all the way around, well this was cut out of the top of the steering wheel so the driver would not get his fingers caught in it. There was also a switch under the dash that would cut the brake lights and turn signals off from the back. The second car that I thought was awesome was a 62 corvette with big brakes and fuel injection. It had two front sway bars and traction bars ABOVE the rear axle. It was red and was just a really cool car because I had never seen a big brake car before.
It was really cool for me to go into that place today and see these rare cars. I have never seen such rare cars with neat stories to go with them before! It really was an awesome experience.
probably "corvette bronze," unusual color for sure but was not extremely rare in 68. True L-89 option was very rare - only 624 in 68, out of 2,898 with the 435 hp engine.
