Default First time poster, question about spinners on 15 " wheel

Hi everyone, I'm Dave from Winston-Salem, NC.

I have a '79 with 15" aluminum wheels and added a set of spinners over the weekend. They are from Eckler's, the set that comes with the adapters that anchor to the wheel with set screws & then the spinner screws on that with one more set screw to secure it to the adapter.

My question is.. will those adapters have to come off to change a tire ?

The reason I ask is that I've already had one come loose, so I pulled it off by hand before I lost it. I think the problem is the set screws aren't large enough to really get a good grip on the wheel.

Soooo, I was thinking, if the adapter doesn't interfere with taking a tire off and on the wheel, couldn't I spot weld the adapter to the wheel from the back to insure it won't come off?

Thx,

Dave

That's a joke right? You're not really gonna put spinners on a vette, are you?

The spinners have to come off to change the tire and balance the wheel.
I have a set of spinners as well, not installed yet because I also think they'll come loose with the supplied set screws.
I'll probably drill a small hole (1/8" diameter, 1/8" deep) in each rim to prevent the spinner from moving outwards even if the setscrew comes loose. There's not much room for a drill inside the hole - a dremel might get the job done... In addition I'll use locktite on the threads

Thanks Red, will the adapter have to come off also to change a tire ?
If not, I can just screw off the spinner itself and leave the adapter on.

I too was thinking of drilling a small indention in the wheel for the set screw to anchor to.

Thx,

Dave

The adapter stays on. The spinner will probably have to come of. I use clear silicon liberaly spread inside the threads on the spinner. Twist the sucker TIGHT, then set the set screw. i haven't had any problems yet.

Thanks Pan.. I think I'll actually spot weld the adapters onto the wheel.
The spinners are actually well designed as far as how they attach, it's the adapters that aren't quite up to speed.

Thanks for the help guys !

It will have to come off so they can mount the rim on their machine to change the tire and balance.... if they could leave it on they would manage to damage it anyways

Hello,
I bought a 1975 earlier this year that had spinners on the wheels already. I found that I do have to either remove the spinner, or at least loosen it up in order to get to my lug nuts.

You can see in this photo that one of the lug nuts is behind the spinner itself.

Don't spot weld. use JB (thin coat on the inside of the center rim. It will hold those center cones on tight. the spinner caps will come off, so you can change tires etc... make sure to use one screw to keep the spinner cap on tight and to dissuade creeps who like to steal.

I JB'd mine..

I thought those things were called "knock offs"

When I saw your topic title I was afraid you meant these:

How about some loctite? the blue is not as strong as the red but it should work without having to drill. Just a suggestion.

Hey Msvetteman - I don't think that he is talking about "spinner" hubcaps, if that is what you were thinking of. I believe he is referring to the "knock off" style spinners that you saw on a lot of C-2's. I have the swept fin spinners on my 79 vette with the stock aluminum mags. And no, they don't keep spinning after the car stops....

But I am gonna get one of those little little dogs whose head bobbles around and whose eyes light up when I step on the brakes!

I have a young (25) girl that I work with.. I mentioned to her the other day I was gonna put spinners on the Vette. She said she wanted some for her car too, which is an old Mazda something.

I'm like WTF ? Then she tells me what "spinners" are

I've always called them knock offs, now I call them a PITA.

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I'll let ya'll know what I come up with and how it works out.

BTW, great forum

Thank god you were talking about Knock offs...

The "bling bling" spinner rims belong on ricer vehicles, or SUVs of rappers with more money than common sense.

I went with the silicon glue and stay off real bumpy roads

ps I have lost 2 so far, so I would get a extra set just so if you need them next time you got em, looks real wierd with one missing, you think that's what everyone is looking at.....
