Does anyone know if you can still buy lacquer paint anywhere? I mean does PPG,House of Kolor or BASF still make it? I would like to try a project using this paint Im trying to get a real deep look maybe something else is better if you know of something please pass it on.
I painted my 73 last year and used acrylic lacquer. I came out fine, but when I need to repaint it I will use basecoat/clearcoat. It is much more durable and if you color sand and buff you will get just as nice a job. You can still buy lacquer here in Chicago, but it may not be here for long. I think I would go the 2 pack route. Just my 2cents worth.

Thanks for the advice I did not realize I could sand the base coat clear coat to give it more depth.
PPG still sells lacquer in Detroit. It's probably time to change over and learn the newer paints. They really are easier, faster and more durable than lacquer. As said earlier, you can still wet sand and buff to get an incredible finish. Application and paint flow is similar to older enamels and might take some practice to perfect. Dry time is slower, so cleanliness is a must if not using a booth.
PPG is the only manufacturer of lacquer anymore that I'm aware of but as mentioned it's not the same as the "old" lacquer since they removed the lead out of it.
BC/CC makes more sense nowadays if you plan on actually driving the car rather than keeping it as a trailer queen that never gets used.
yes, BC/CC can be wetsanded and it comes out looking great!
My '65 was just repainted last year and it was done with 2 coats of base color, wetsanded, followed by two more coats of base color, than 4 coats of clear and wetsanded and buffed out to a beautiful shine.
if your paint is a metallic you do NOT want to wetsand the final coats of base before you clearcoat it or it messes up the way the metaalic appears since the metallic is lighter than the rest of the base paint it tend to rise to the surface and you mess it up if you wetsand it before clear coating it.
Calvin, the Pro Mod Camaro that you saw in my shop when you got the carpet from me was a PPG Base /Clear job that was sanded and buffed right there in the shop where it sat.
I will have to get some pic of it outside in the sun, now that it is almost back together and has had all the art work air brushed on it, it gives the car a whole new look.
