Someone suggested to ask him to finish it. Given he's probably now pissed and would do a poor job, I surely wouldn't do that. One year later paint starts popping off!!! Sorry to hear about your troubles and good luck with it.
I just spent $9,000 on mine. They did a great job, but I had to have them give me an estinate and I told him to stay very close to it. The car was in the shop for 5 months, a lot of paint booth time and dry time. Blocking and sanding. Car was very straight when started but over the years the seam areas needed to be reworked.
Have you tried to iron out the differences since the initial incident? The impression I got was you asked to have you and a freind look at the car prior to having the paint applied and the guy blew up. Did a heated debate ensue or was it over that quickly. If you're going to take the car, a call to the police ahead of time would be advisable. That should give you a pretty good indication as to wether they'll be on your side or his. He is also a member of the Slatington Borough Council, might be good or might work against you as far as getting assistance from the police.
- A customer has the right to see his car. A competant P&B shop that takes offense HAS SOMETHING ATO HIDE - PERIOD. The estimate was less than $8k in the beginning and now it is $8-10k. AT $8100, he should almost be done. Colorsanding, buffing, assembly etc will take the rest of the -$100 to $1900.
Tell him to finish it as agreeded or he'll see you in court. You don't need anything in writing in Judge Judy's court, just a hand shake. You did shake his hand, didn't you.
I had a similar situation up to last month. Body shop had my car for 14 months. He stopped working on it the last 5 months. All he had managed to do was sand the body and remove the interior.
I went to a lawyer for advice first. Since we had no paperwork between us (none was wrote up) I came in and demanded my car along with a police back up. Sometimes you have to be nasty. Picked up my car and never paid any money.
Go see a lawyer first for a consult. Mine was 75.00. worth it for the advice. When you pick up your car be ready to do it right then and now. have a trailer or tow truck ready. Don't cave in to the azzhat.
Something sure sounds fishy to me too. Doesn't make sense that it would offend him for you to see your car. As for making peace and having him finish it, I don't think that I would do that if it were me. Someone like that might just screw it up out of spite. By the way, since he didn't hold up his end, I think I would ask for court costs and attorney's fees as well.
I think if I was in your position I would make one more phone call to the paint shop better yet go done there with someone so you have a witness. Tell them you would like to work this thing out. Tell him you can't understand why he was insulted by you wanting to bring a friend along to take a look at the body of the car before it was painted. At this point see what he says. If what he says is not to your satisfaction tell him that you don't want to have to involve the Better Business Bureau and The Attorney Generals Office on this if you don't have to and see again what he says. From there you will have a good idea where you will need to go with this. If he is not willing to work with you I would first fill out an online complaint to the Better Business Bureau who will contact him first within a couple of days of receiving your complaint and then take it from there. Sometimes hearing from the BBB will change a repairs shops attitude right away. If that does no good contact the Attorney Generals office next filling out an online complaint. If this doesn't work you will need to definitely contact a lawyer next.
At least at this point this shop will know you are not fooling around having gone through everyone you needed to contact. I don't think it will come down to a lawyer though here. If not the BBB, hearing from the Attorney Generals office will shake him up. Good luck. Let us know how you make out.
Thanks again everyone for all the support. What do you guys think is a fair offer for work done. I am considering making a final offer. He did all the disassembly, minor body work ( 4 inch ) crack. paint removal , primer, and 80% of blocksanding. Thanks
Holy cow - is this a stock paint job or custom? I feel sorry for some of you guys that are laying out $9-$10K for a paint job. I had a complete custome paint job done. Interior stripped out of the car, completly resprayed inside and out. 4 coats of base and 4 coats of clear. The car was a dark blue repainted Silver/Gray Metallic. You won't find one hint of the dark blue left anywhere on her. Cost of the paint job $5000.00. Cost of restoration parts, i.e. new interior, new wheels, rebadging, new glass tops, new exhaust system: $3000.00

As I mentioned in the previous thread, try to work it out. You may have a harder time finding someone else to work on your car being someone else was already involved with it. Most shops will probably tell you they can't guarantee someone elses body work and it may end up costing you even more money then you previously thought. Unless you are not telling us everything I think this could be worked out as far as this shop not wanting to paint your car because they were insulted. Maybe you didn't use the correct words when talking to the shop. If so I still believe it could be worked out. If not let the BBB decide if or how much you should have to pay if you decide to take the car out of the shop. Get the BBB involved in this one if not satisfied and then go from there.
I caved in, the thought of the car sitting outside and me not driving it for months did me in. I called and we settled on $6500. Thanks for all the support
I can't believe he did anywhere near $6500.00 to your car. Now you are going to lay out another $3000 to $4000 to get it finished. Man are you going to cry when you get that first rock chip on that very expensive paint job. Course I'd be crying right now if I were you.
Good to hear you got this behind you and look at it this way you saved
$1,600.00 plus the lawyer fees and you'll have the car back with time left this summer to have some fun!!!
Bottom line nobody wins with this kind of and everyone with a vette will stay away from BUZZY!!
