Default water pump?

can i change my short water pump to a long water pump so i can get a pullet kit to go with the long water pump.... i'm still running stock fan.... any reasons for not changing so i can have better options for a pulley/bracket setup

I was going to do this myself but ended up getting the March Alum pulley set for the stock vette set up with pwr steering pulley. Heres what I found while researching: If your vette is 75 or up and has the small block with the notch in the cross member there will be no problem fitting the longer w/p and pulleys that go with it. However, you will have to change your brackets for your alt, pwr steering pump, and a/c to move them forward to match up with the long pump. This can be done with spacers between the brackets and head or block mounting points though. If you are running the stock fan you will be about 1.5in to 2.25in closer to the radiator so the shroud will need some fitting to clear and make sure the fan is far enough away from the radiator at the top throughout the engines range of movement. You can run electric fans to solve this problem OR you can get a shorter fan if you are running clutch fan (shaft length shorter), or if it is a flex fan use a shorter spacer. These can be done with the long pump due to it not having the large diameter w/p shaft of the vette and many other cars use different length fan shafts, you just need to get a look at what the length and diameters are and match up what you need. Imperial cooling is a good source for fan specs.

yeah.... i gave up on detroit and leaving in 2 months...... i need to get out of here...no work....... i got accepted to grad school here but decided to just move and work... school was 50,000 for 2 years..... i can't afford that right now........

so wish me luck on my cruise cross-country .........

so, if i get a long w/p then i have to shim everything then...... is the block different or something to have to shim........ i would think that if i could match the long w/p and the pulley/bracket setup then i shouldn't have to shim anything....

i just went through the same deal after switching the edelbrock h20 pump for a stewarts. instead of shim city i ponied up for the march crank alt and h20 pulleys. it only took one washer to shim the back of the alternator bracket to corrrect a slight angulation problem and its perfect. just be ready to make a few round trips to the auto parts store . it takes alot of time to size the belts. i wanted to run them as short as possible and still be able to get valve covers off to set valves. alot of on and off. totally worth the time and $$$$$$$$
