is there a difference between a hand tap and a drill tap?...... i used a hand tap and it clogged up the tip (brass/aluminum) and now i can't use it.....i have 800 holes to tap and i'm not tapping by hand......
ahh... ok...thanks........ i'm going to the hardware store to see what they have for quality

I don't think they make carbide taps, I could be wrong. Are you using a thru tap or a bottom tap, have you used the right size drill for the hole, are you using a elec. hand drill or drill press. With any tap you can't just goe right thru the piece, go a little at a time keep cutting oil on it and on alum/brass keep the speed slow. If you can go to a industrial supply store for your taps and info if you need it. 800 holes, wow, lotsa luck.
i already drilled the pilot hole and it's a through hole... about 1/8" that i have to tap...... i'll see what i can get here..... the hardware store i go to is an industrial store so they should have it...... brafasco i believe is the name

and it's aluminum/brass.... so i guess i have to keep the speed down a bit....i'm using a hand drill for the tap..... i used a drill press for the pilots
As other person mentioned use a tap oil which will keep the tap from clogging but you will still have to clean it between holes. I find one of those cheap Hobby brushes works well for this. Also WD-40 works well also for a tap lube and to keep the threads clean. WD-40 also works great when porting on aluminum.
yes, the taps designed for drilling w/ a cordless drill are different, self starting and tap in 1 go. You can't use a hand tap.
That's new to me?? I have hundreds of taps in the shop and they are all hand taps and I use my electric drill all the time.
I have starter taps, they have a gentle start and that is what I would use for hand taping too and a few bottoming taps.
I ALWAYS use a taping compound, never ever tap dry and again it is news to me that there are different taps for hand and machine taping.
If you are doing a 6/32 you use a number 36 drill bit for the pilot hole, not a 1/8th , a # 36 or .1065, using taping compound, use a electric drill and between each hole clean and lube the tap.'
For both aluminum or brass it should be no problem.
How deep are you taping and are you passing right through??
If they are thru holes, try using a type called a gun tap. It's a two fluted tap that pushes the chip out in front of the tap rather than clogging up the flutes, and they are ideal for use in a drill. Machine tool supply places should carry them, or try MSC's online catalog
so i managed to tap all 800 holes that i needed to do...... just a little bit of oil on the tip of the tap fixed all my problems...... i'll post picks in a few days once i'm finished with the "product"
thanks for the help and i'll look into the other options once i get my head back in order..... i had a deadline and had to rush a few items
