Default bumper edging...yeah or ney?

My 82 is getting ready to hit the paintbooth, I noticed that the front and rear bumper covers were still completly attached.

I called the bodyman this morning and questioned if he was going to pull the covers back a little from the body or leave them attached when he paints the car?

I questioned if there will be a problem with the paint cracking in the joint between the body and covers....he said that the covers were a pain to fit (ACI fiberglass pieces) that he had planned to leave them completly attached and didn't think there would be a problem. If anything happened later down the road he would go back and fix it.

Maybe i'm overreacting......had anyone else every left the covers completly attached and it turned out fine? It seems like the body flex would cause problems...but i'm not sure.

I've never been through this my self but I have seen several vettes that the paint was cracking between the joints.I'm getting ready to paint my '76 and plan on pulling the front and rear bumpers off.Mine are both acs fiberglass and they are a pain to fit but the results are worth the effort. If I were you I would have him pull them off, your paying him and he should remember that.Just my $1.05 worth

I'd have them removed. If he says it's too hard to refit, just do it yourself

With everyone. They must be removed for best results. The joint will be filled with paint and will crack in time. You don't want to have problems and go back for repair even though he offered.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I'm not going to rock the boat.....been hearing too many "body shop" horror stories lately about pissing off the bodyman.

I'm hoping his concience gets too him and he goes ahead and pull the bumpers back a bit since I brought it to his attention that I'm concerned. I gave him brand new SS bumper retainers that should be a piece of cake to remove the nuts since they are brand new....so it's not like he's fighting a rusted set of bolts.

He's been pretty much a perfectionist so far ( the car looks awsome) so maybe he'll do right by pulling the bumpers back a inch or so, if not.....I will def be back up there for a repaint if it starts cracking.

For a Urethane bumper, I would worry about cracking, but the fiberglass bumper should be much better. I wouldn't worry about it, myself. In fact, I'd insist that they glass over the seam...
