Default 69 Steering column help please

I have a 69 steering column and need to install the turn signal lever. It attaches with a small screw that is behind the black portion in the pic. We can't seem to figure out how to remove it to get to the screw. Tried prying it off, but that doesn't work. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

lock plate remover.

go to www.corvettefaq.com and look at Jim Shea's papers on steering columns. If I am not mistaken he was an engineer on the design of the system and a member of this forum. he helped me when I had an issue tremendously.

If I remember correctly, the black lock plate has a spring behind it. There is a c-clip on the shaft near the steering wheel end which prevents the lock plate from being pushed off the shaft. You need to push the lock plate towards the engine compartment end using a lock plate remover. This removes the pressure on the c-clip which can then be removed from the shaft. Lock plate removers are now readily available and cheap. When I did my column, I used a thick circular steel disk with a hole in the center (slip it on the shaft and use the existing nut to hold it on), and two tapped holes with bolts threaded into the holes to push on the lock plate. It's fun making your own tools but they are so cheap now it's a toss up. Make detailed notes and take pictures when you disassemble it. It took me four tries to get my TT column back together correctly.

Thanks. Jim's info did the trick. Didn't have to remove the lock plate, just turn the steering wheel until the access hole lines up with the screw. Saved me from doing more work than needed.
