I am looking at getting a new engine in my 1980 Corvette.
I’m not trying to build a hot rod, I am really only interested in matching the original engine (of course more power wouldn’t hurt) – say 250 - 300 HP.
Any suggestions on what to use?
I haven’t planned on adding fuel injection unless the price is right.
I’ve talked to two different Chev/GMC dealers, but I am not impressed by their level of service. I’d like to have a better idea of what’s available in currently manufactured engines so any suggestions will give me something to research.

I just snatched the crap motor out of my car this weekend and am putting in a GMPP 350/330 horse motor. I picked it up at Summit for $2399 for the long block. I should have it up and running in the next week or two. I'll post pics and what I think about it!
I am watching 69 camfreak with much anticipation of the outcome. I have been looking at the specs on the 350 HO and the zz4 with much interest. I do think that the 350 HO is a great deal on a motor for the money. When I look at the zz4 I think the intake manifold that comes with it may cause hood clearance issues and I think you will also need to replace the water pump with a short leg version. In the 350 HO you can order the short block with the vortec heads for about 2500 delivered to your door. Then add the vortec style of intake that should fit under your hood with a dropped air cleaner . Good luck and watch for 69 camfreak's future posts as I am . Brent
...last year I installed the '73-'85 Direct Replacement GM 260hp 350ci 4bolt main motor in my '75 coupe. Got it on an Internet sale for $1287. Been in the car for over 7,000mi now and it's been perfect. Used my carb, intake, alternator, starter, water pump, fuel pump, distributor, exhaust manifolds. Everything was a direct bolt on.
I installed the 350HO long block 5 years ago and am very happy with it, however for your "American" concern, the block has "Mexico" cast at the rear. I think it is one of GMPP's best crate bargains. A 750 carb is recommended but I changed to an Edelbrock 650 after a couple thousand miles for fuel economy of 18 mpg with a 4 speed and 3.08 rear. I used a GMPP Bow Tie aluminum intake, 11" Centerforce Dual Friction clutch, Dynomax headers and stock air cleaner. If you are thinking of the long block, price out all of the parts you'll need in advance and compare cost to the Deluxe version to avoid sticker shock, for some people the deluxe version may be a better choice.
