I'm going to replace the gauge bezel to install a new CD radio, and my question is does the bezel come off without all the gauges and related wiring? Or is the bezel mounted in front of the gauges and they are attached to some frame behind? I hope the second is the case!!
The instrument cluster is connected to the back of the bezel with 4 screws (at least on my '80). It is highly recommended not to cut on your original bezel if you can avoid it due to its originality! Buy you an aftermarket bezel and cut it. Bezels run from roughly $75 to $100 for the later model C3's. I can't speak for the earlier ones. You can buy bezels already set-up for DIN type radios but they run roughly $200 ea. I cut my aftermarket bezel with a dremel and a fine hacksaw blade after measuring everything at least twice. Good luck with it and welcome to the forum.
Gauges are mounted to the bezel from behind. If you pull the bezel, you should expect all of it to come out together. Ditto for the stock stereo; it mounts to the bezel, but from the front. Go slowly. There is apt to be lots of things to unplug and unfasten.
