Default Hood Insulation

Can someone tell me what the real purpose of the underhood insulation is ? Was it to keep the heat from damaging the hood? I would really like to get rid of it. What do you guys think ?

I didn't replace mine when I did the 69 over 3 years ago. No problems whatsoever. I do open the hood when I pull it in to the garage to let the heat disperse quickly and not just cook things - but not sure that's even necessary.

Mostly to reduce noise.

I thought if there was an engine fire the plastic tabs holding in the insulation would melt and the insulation would fall putting out the fire? Maybe thats just on new cars.

I took my insulation off

well let me rephrase that - the dadgum little rodents removed most of the insulation to make a nest in the air cleaner before I bought the car.

I have not had any problems yet and do not expect any.

I am actually going to put a crossed flags decal/paint under the hood when I finally get around to painting the car.

When I bought my '70 there wasn't any insulation under the hood (maybe somebody out there can tell me if it's supposed to be there on a 350/300 '70 coupe) but when the previous owner had the water pump replaced by BubbaAuto Bubba decided that previous owner (a little ol' lady, believe it or not) wouldn't notice that he cheaped out on the heater hose....instead of obtaining/using the correct hose that turns down 90 deg. from the outlet and goes around the bottom of the AC compressor Bubba just put a straight length of hose over the top of said compressor where it circulated all that REALLY HOT water about 1/2" form the hood, producing a special paint effect that looks a little bit like measles. I figured that my miracle driveway paint job would eventually fix this but about two or three weeks after my miracle driveway paint job Bubba's measles reappeared like some sort of evil curse.....I think almost all C3's are cursed with some form of Bubba Disease.

The hot hose isnt causing the measles on your car, the AC compressor has caused it. Sometimes oil escapes the compressor and gets into the fiberglass. Get an aftermarket cover for the AC compressor and I dont know how your going to fix the hood, I think most end up buying a new hood to get rid of the problem before they repaint.

Mine didn't have either the insulation or the weatherstripping. Seems fine without, but am I missing something? Like previously stated, fire suppression maybe? If it's really a benefit I'll add it, but my hood is painted and looks great, so I'd like to leave as is...

I'm convinced it is for noise....as far as "smothering" a fire,I would not wait for that to happen....just pull the pin on your extinguisher, and try to put the fire out...
