Wanted to paint/dye the new dash and trim pieces. Didnt happen.
Guy at Corvette shop says i need Dye to go from the 81 red that i had on the trim pieces as well as coloring the new dash the 70 corvette interior red i choose. He says clean it real good, wipe down with some degreaser and spray ....the dye will cover the old color.
Guy at paint store says "you dont want dye, you want low luster paint, but before, you need to degrease it, wipe with this pre-prep stuff/conditioner, then spray the plastic parts/ABS pieces with this adhesion promotor to make it soft and so it will stick.
Corvette shop guy says the paint shop guy is full of crap
Whos correct....this the part ive dreaded and its started to already turn into a nighmare.
I think the plastic parts need paint, vinyl parts need dye. You dont want to mix it up. They both need good good good prep before applying. The prep is the key.

The prep is the key, don't rush. I did saddle to black, everypart, never a problem, never a wear mark even on the seats.
i used the SEM spray cans and the adhesion promoter on the plastic parts. it all still looks like new except the driver's seat bottom is wearing through after 2 years of driving

I used Krylon Fusion Red to do my lower dash, console and some other pieces. Overall it came out good. I think the problem in these 35 year-old cars is not silicones but more likely cigarette smoke. Years of smoking in these cars makes it very hard to clean the surfaces so paint will stick. Clean and clean again. Use adhesion promoter and be patient. I did need to wipe paint off one piece and reclean but I am happy with the results.
Hi I am new vette owner, and i was interested in this topic since the seats in my 1976 are in really good condtion (they were covered for 20 yrs with black seat covers by previous owner) but have some black residue and the white seats now look tired but no cracks or rips.
I was not aware you could dye them. Can someone give me a little more info on this and what product to use?
