CWR: 454ci, 270hp (automatic transmission)

3999289: 454ci, 270hp (You read the 3 as an 8 im assuming)

I think the T is for the Tonawonda (sp?) engine plant

0803, Is that August 3, 1973?

CWR - have to look it up, but it must be the suffix for the 454 with auto..

Your vin derivative, so that would be the original engine and your very low # vin

Do you have access to the car, or just the engine? If you have access to the car, please tell me what the date code, paint code, and trim code are on the trim tag in the driver's door jam. I am doing research on 74 Vette date and paint codes.

Correct. All Corvette big blocks where assembled at the Tonawanda, New York facility. All Corvette smallblocks were assembled at Flint, Michigan (V code).

Any idea of the significance of the casting CONV at the rear?

I have never seen CONV included in the casting numbers like this. Surely GM didn't designate this particular block for a convertible ??

CONV may mean Conventional, as most BB's say HIPERF, PASS, TRUCK, etc in this area. I can't find any documentation on it in any of Casting Databases.

CWR code was used for the 1973 Corvette 454 275 HP engine

Thanks...I've never seen it either.....just as long as it's not the super secret code for a J C Whitney replacement block!

Yessss, your engine was cast by a red haired man wearing galoshes and a Jim Beam hat...he had Life cereal for breakfast and two glasses of Oran...no wait...Grapefruit juice. Any other questions?
