Default Possible relocation from US to Germany

I have an opportunity to take a job position within my company in Hamburg. If my wife is ok with it, I'll put a bid in for it. It would be cool to drive my '71 on Germany's roads.

How's the cost of living & schools? I have a 6 year old too.

Thanks in advance.

hamburg is a great town, but it can get very expensive. Make sure you have a cost of living adjustment in salary to accomodate things that have very high taxes we dnt see in US since germany is a patrially social state.

rent in that city can be as much as, or comparable to livin in NYC or LA fo about the same amount of space. Fuel is taxed heavily adn will be a major cost of living factor. also you will have to find schooling, wich will be probaly at an acadamy, or private school $$$ and health care is completly different.

these things aside though it can be a great experience for the whole family. I lived there 4 for years and loved it, though in my case i was army (officer). but i lived on the economy as they say, whic means i rented an aparyment in several towns, and had the beneft of a px, fuel coupons, and a cost of livign allowance

to give you some idea, my salary withthe COLA was an extra 15 to 20 per year figure another 5- 10 for a civilian with a family

ask a lot of questions, schooling heathe care COLA, phone bils etc

prepare your family, it will be quite an adjustment but well worth it in th elong run

income tax and medical = 50% of your paycheck

sales tax is 16%, goes up to 19% in January 2007

unless they pay really good forget about it...

The Euro is at 1.30 USD right now...

I forgot:

gas is roughly $6.30 per gallon

tax for your C3 is $$$, it used to be 40 DM (20Euro) per 100 cc if you don't have a catalyc converter. 20x57=1140 Euro (x1.3) almost 1500 USD

IF you get the 'historic' registration you'll pay less but keep in mind that that tax is paid every year....
