Default Downshift/Detent Cable Install Help

I'm working on my '78 auto tranny, and the detent cable is cut off at the carb. I have a new cable and will be installing it in the next day or two. Have any of you done this before? It's pretty straight forward up by the carb, but I'm wondering what to expect on the transmission end. I assume I'll have to take off the pan, but I'm wondering about the valve body or anything else in the tranny. I've never been in an auto before, so any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers!

If you drop the pan, you will see where the tab hooks around a thin wire link, simple to twiste, and remove, then re-install new cable and pan. If you try and unhook it without removing the pan, you will get alot of fluid coming out the hole, its alot easier with pan off

Surprisingly easy with pan off, good time to change filter and fluid. Great repair, you'll be pleased to have your "kick-down" back!

Steve

As mentioned, with the pan off you'll be able to see where to hook up the cable end. You do not need to drop the valve body.

I disagree about the fluid loss. I have driven a t350 and 700r4 without a cable installed at all. I failed to install the cable on the 700 while the body was off my current car (81). Last Tuesday, I had to drive it to my new home about 5 miles with only a plastic plug in the hole. Last night I removed all the bolts from the passenger side crossmember and the two verticle bolts on the drivers side so I could lower the tail of the trans. to install the cable. I had zero fluid loss. If the trans needs servicing drop the pan, if not you can just unbolt the cable and replace it.
