I tried to dye mine from dark blue to black. Hated the way they came out. Still had a blue tint to it. The worst part was the texture of the carpet afterwards, it was stiff, very course. I just took it out and put in new carpet. If you want to just freshen up the color, try a small area and see how you like it.

I am in the same boat as you. I have been watching some threads and even asked a few questions. Everyone has said that you wont be satisfied with the results and will end up buying new. I (like you) have black carpet and it has gone gray (faded). The carpet is in good shape - it is just the color. Some areas are even in pretty good shape and have not lost any color.

But like I said most here have said that unfortunately new carpet is the way to go.

I think it might be to what degree the carpet has faded. The loop in my 69 was in VG condition, but had a weird reddish tint in areas. I assumed it was from the sun. Black RIT dye did not work and I ended up having to wash it out with a hose as it did not set. Maybe if I had a large enough container to boil it in it could have worked. After the rinsed carpet dried, I lightly spray painted the affected areas with a semi-gloss black rattle can. Lightly means just enough to make the discolored areas black, too much would have made the loop material stiff. It is now all black and looks like new, but was in good condition when I started. If you don't set the RIT dye by boiling, it will run as soon as it gets wet. This means if your long pants touch the wet carpet it will be absorbed and not look pretty.
