i'm having a tough time finding the source of why my stop light fuse keeps blowing. the wiring is difficult to trace and i'm not much of an electrical guru. i could use any help available. thanks.
I would start at the brake lights themselves. In some cases the sockets will go bad and short out the fuse. Check all the sockets carefully as a starting point. Check the fuse box itself and the connectors with the fuse unpluged from it's socket. See if you have a lot of corrosion around the fuse's terminals. Check the wire connectors that seperate the front harness from the rear harness for problems to. With the front and rear harness seperated you can add fused power to hot leads in the rear harness to see which harness has the short in it. Can be very tedious work so hopefully be something simple to fix your problem, houstonvett
I had an intermittant short on my turn signals/ brake lights, traced it to the rubber grommet that went through the body behind the seat to the rear lights, had a bare wire.
not sure if this helps any, but when i replace the fuse with the ignition off, the brake lights work fine, but as soon as the ignition is turned on, the fuse pops.
sounds like something has been scabbed into the brake circuit that is on with switched, I know thats not a lot of help, if you were closer I would take a look

Try taking the ignition key buzzer out and see if the short goes away.

Try removing your flasher for your 4 way flashers and your turn signal flasher they both tie together at the 4 way switch.

The key buzzer and the 4 way flasher switch is the only 2 items I see that are connected to the "ign. on" and the brake light fuse.Try moving the 4 way switch in the column.Your wiring going to the back runs along the drivers seat just below the door sill.
I think I fixed it - I wish I knew what I did... :o
I found some bare wire ends coming from the old radio harness, but there is no radio and no power going to the harness. I also took the switch off the steering column, looked at it and put it back on
Something seems to have worked, or maybe I just got lucky for 5 minutes
removed the buzzer and the 4 way flasher and still having problems. i can hear when the fuse pops. it lasts about 5 minutes into my drive and nothing in particular seems to trigger it. i'm on the accelerator with no turn signal or brakes.
bulb contacts look fine, however on one of the bulbs, the glass portion was loose in its socket. i'll be replacing them both when i get to the parts store in the morning but i highly doubt that is the source of my problem.
holy crap, this problem doesn't go away. i was informed by someone yesterday that my tail lights were out again. i've discovered that when i push the horn button on the steering wheel, the fuse will *sometimes* pop. i dunno where to turn now...
