I have a near stock 81. My question is about the small inside the air cleaner, metal type filter. Is it necessary? It seems very restrictive. How will taking it out affect the car?
you talking about the filter connected to the side of the air cleaner that connects to a hose on the valve cover? If so you need that, it keeps the engine from sucking in trash thru the valve cover

No, its a metal / mesh type / circular filter inside the paper filter. It is connected to the bottom half of the air filter housing.
hey pyro...i gotcha man, it wont do anything at all, go ahead take it off if you want, i took the whole assembly off plastic and all that crap and bought a 30 dollar chrome filter from autozone, and its way way better than before on my 81, no probs at all, no check engine lights or anything. Took 10 minutes to swap!
should be ok...like i said i put a whole diff. one on there and took everything inlcuding the plastic ductwork and all that crap off and i'm running good as ever
Yes I do. It was a one year only emission reducing item. The idea was that gas fumes from the carb would be captured in the carbon when sitting. It would then be drawn in and burned when you start the engine. Mine was so clogged that the top 1/2 inch of the air filter was the only part that got dirty. I turned it over and that helped for a while
I removed mine over the winter. Not actually that easy. I ended up using one of those paint stripping hair dryers to heat up the glue and then prying it off with a screwdriver. This was after using a utility knife to remove any glue that I could get at. Whole job took about an hour. NOTICABLE difference, especially at speed.
I keep mine in a box in the garage. Best place for it IMHO.
