Default instrument lamp question

on the gauge panel and speedo/tach panel there is a mixture of
gray and blue sockets for the bulbs.
the parts store lists 2 bulbs used which are 194s and 168s

which bulbs go in which sockets? i know with my last post about my fuel light being on constantly after changing the bulb someone told me i probably had the wrong bulb/socket combination in that position.

any help is appreciated.

Gray wires are panel illumination. Not sure which bulbs they require. All other wiring will have a specific function (turn signal tell-tale, high beam, etc.).

According to GE: the 194 bulbs are 4 watt/25 lumen and 168 bulbs are 5 watt/38 lumen. I just replaced my original 1979 bulbs with Sylvania Long Life bulbs. On the speedo/tach assembly there are 4 gray sockets that take the 194-for the turn signal indicators, brake warning and high beam indicator. The other 9 are blue sockets and take the 168. Don't overlook the gray socket above the wiper switch which also takes the 194. I can't recall the breakdown of the center cluster but it seems the pattern is that the function/indicator type of light uses the gray socket/194 combination while general illumination lights are the blue socket/168 bulb which are brighter. Good luck.

Is that a 78? The 77-82 models used an odd bulb for the HVAC illumination (the light above the center console vents). A standard bulb will fit in there but it won't light up the HVAC controls. The parts vendors carry the proper bulb with the magnifier tip.

Not a clue. Here's the Mid-America page, though.

I couldn't find it on an supporting vendor's page, and I posted the link for informational purposes...

just got back from NAPA and get this............

look in bulb section and find "Wagner BPPC194"
which is a 2 pack of 194 bulbs with grey sockets.

all i really need is the sockets as i have shop packs
of bulbs at home but i take the pack to the counter
and ask the guy if he just sells the sockets.

HIM: none in stock but i can get them $3.49 each.

ME: so i said OK well how much is this 2 pack of wagner's until they come in?

HIM: $2.29 plus tax

ME: how come i can get 2 complete assembly's with bulbs for $2.29 but separately you charge $3.49 just for a socket?

HIM: uhh gee i don't know.

so i bought the twin pack of sockets and bulbs and he can keep the
$3.49 sockets until i can get to the other napa that's in my area.

i realize that, my point was how can they sell a 2 pack with bulbs
and sockets for $2.29 but ask $3.49 each for separate sockets?

I've seen things like that happen before. I just buy whatever is cheaper and go on with life.

Did you get hold of a 558 bulb for the HVAC controls?

not yet, still looking locally to see if i can get a hold of one
if i have to order it its going to cost more for the darn shipping
than the bulb itself.
i may end up waiting until vettefest at englishtown in august and pick one.
