Was going to get the A/C system evacuated and leak checked. Hooked up my gauges and still some pressure so decided to just throw a couple of cans of R12 in. Question is, can I hook the low side hose from the gauge to the low press fitting on the back of the compressor or do I need to go waaaay down in the fenderwell and hook it into the accumulator.

low side is low side. dosn't matter where it is. as long as you are double extra sure that the one on the back of the compressor is low side, use it. that's much easier to get to.
Well, had a good day. White 79 took 2 cans, blows plenty cold now. Wasn't sure if it would need any other work as I just bought it last year.
Got motivated and ended up putting 1-1/2 cans in the black 79 and then not wanting to waste any R12 topped off the 78SA with the 1/2 can. That Vette blew cold but the compressor seemed to be cycling too often. Better now. Hope I'm good for a few years now .

Any more insights would be helpful. I am going to rake over my system as each year most of my freon leaks out. I have had the system totally rebuilt and many pieces replaced, condensor, accumulator, O-rings, etc. I am going to check over each and every fitting myself. I lucked out, my gf's mom had a 30lb tank of R12 left when her dad died. I fugure at worst I will recharge it each year and when I am out of R12 I will convert to R134.
30 lbs. should last ya a year or so . Well, maybe 15! Having the system opened up you'll have to have it evacuated before you charge it. If it's been charged since and just low you can probably just add to it like I did. I was ready for some additional expenses but lucked out. Was surprised I still had (probably) 2 lbs. still in the system on the white one. Maybe when the pressure gets that low any leakage slows way down. Someone in the past messed with it as the wires to the pressure switch had been cut and reattached. Why they didn't just follow the wires another 4" to the end and see that it just unplugs is a mystery to me. Good luck with it. I've got gauges with R12 fittings if you want to take a ride down. Beats guessing.
