I have already climbed under the car 3 times trying to figure out what it is. Checked to make sure the exhaust was not hanging loose, looking for other obvious things but can not figure out what the heck it is. Tends to happen mostly when I come to quick stop...Sounds like a few pieces of aluminum sheet metal or something else clanking and rattling around. Stops after a few seconds and then fine as I pull away.
Any ideas? I am getting driven crazy by this noise.
My spare tire.To me it sounds too light and clanging....Is there something specific about it that I should look at?
I have been focusing my efforts more towards the front of the car as the sound appears to be coming from somewhere underneath the firewall / cockpit area more towards the front. As much as I could get under the car with jackstands, I used my creeper to go underneath and check things out but to no avail.
ShaneLU97,
I have a similar problem with my 68 coupe. Just finished restoring it and noise was never there before. Comes from front end and I can't find anything loose underneath. Just had front end alignment and they also checked and everything was tight.
Thought it might be the headlight buckets bouncing around as the paint shop had removed them.
This metallic clanking is very annoying and detracts from an otherwise nice car.
I will be watching your thread closely in hopes someone comes up with something. It's definitely coming from the front. Not exhaust, not ignition shields, I checked those, I'm stumped.
Kurt

Last name Bunting? You don't have a brother in VA named Moses, do you?
As for the problem. It is extremely annyong. Roll-up to a stop and instead of enjoying the rumbling of the engine I am cringing at the sound.

how are you making out in the rain????
I was thinking maybe just try pushing on the entire assembly and see it it moves at all..........perhaps the tire has lost some air in it and its moving or jostling around some....you know now that i think about it one of the top plastic cover bolts came out and was rolling around in my pan

Rain is awful. Is Southern Jersey getting hit as bad?
As for te pan, I will check it. BTW, any hints on getting that darn spare tire out! I do not see a lock on mine and when I try and unscrew that bolt, nothing happens. My understanding was that you unscrew the bolt until you feel resistance and then lift it up and over.

central coastal jersey where i am we are ok just normal rain fall
On my set up you unscrew the bolt and it lowers the pan down and at some point you can pick up the pan and swing the bolt out of the way and then the pan lowers to the ground. On mine i had to undo the two bolts that held this bolt assembly on to the frame and clean everything to make it work well

Thanks. I will try again. Maybe I just need to put a bit more force into it. Was just nervous about breaking something.
Automatic or standard? Could have a loose torque converter bolt bouncing around in the bell housing...
Automatic....That could be it. Sounds like it is coming from that general area. Anyway I could get in there and check? I am trying to picture it in my head but I can not remember any sort of access panel, etc underneath the bell housing.
Shane,
No brothers or sisters anywhere.
I know what you mean about the sound. People see a cool car and then hear this awful clanging sound and it takes away from the picture.
Remove the flexplate shield to get access to the flexplate and tq converter.
Thanks. I will try that tonight. Like I said, I am having trouble picturing it in my head but I am assumiung this will be something that looks vaguely like a oil pan or transmission pan but in between. Bolts to the bottom of the trans / bellhousing.
Stewart - Thanks again. Appreciate the info and help.
Bob - Sounds like a famous last thought I have had many times..."That looks solid enough...shouldn't break.....*snap*"
;-)
Thanks. I will def try that tonight or tomorrow night as well. Maybe pull out a breaker bar.
Could it be the radiator shroud? If it is not sitting in that little lip down below it can bounce around and hit the fan.... Took me forever to figure that one out.
How about the sheet metal heat shields under the front of the floor ?
Also, maybe a loose splash shield just behind/inside the front wheel wells.
How are the motor mounts ? Loose mounts can make both the fan and exhaust hit.
