Took my 73 to the track Friday night and was quite pleased with the results. Made 5 passes and back on the trailer without breaking anything. My first pass:
rxn .537 (the lights are pretty aren't they )
I1 2.150 (lots of tire squealing, that is GOOD right?? )
I2 5.711 (2nd gear fishtailed worse than first)
E.T. 8.622
MPH 86.006
The car has a moderate built 454 roller (500 hp ish) with a TKO 500 tranny and street tires. The harder I launched, the worse I did. My 60' time went to 2.666 with a 9.1 ET when I left the line "hard". I am planning to try it again next weekend with drag slicks. I wonder how much my times will improve.

Sounds like you are having fun with it Brent. Just what these cars are made for. I have never done drag racing because of the exact thing you were worried about, breaking. Keep us posted on how it goes.
You do want some wheel spin to exhaust some of the energy. Watch you don't hook up to good with drag slicks or something may break. Reaction time is what you need to lower also, I know you never posted your time, so I'm only offering a suggestion.
Drag slicks will put you in the 1.80's on 60's probably..maybe high 1.70's,,,,but don't break anything!! You want the tires to spin at least one full turn when you launch..or at least slip the clutch so you don't hit things too hard. You want to keep RPM's up by spinning tires a little or slipping the clutch or both. Don't lower air pressure too much to start with.
I think slicks can put you in the 8.20-8.30's pretty easily.
Have fun...big blocks and stick transmisions are FUN aren't they!!

Meet me at Knoxville dragway next Friday night and I'll swear you'll love it! If you BREAK, I'll help you fix it. My launches were less stressful at the track than in front of my house. With drag slicks this might change but, I can't let my "buddy" Steve tell me to keep my big block at the house. Let's go Eddie!
..... if the slicks you try-out are a larger diameter than your street-tires, you are, in-effect, taking gear-ratio OUT-of the rear-end:
just something to keep in-mind.....
Looking-forward to a detailed-report from your next-outing!!!!!
