Default Matching numbers or dependable engine?

I realize matching numbers are important, especially for a 69 or so vette. But for an 81 would it matter to get a good dependable running engine or to rebuild the one in my car? Are people more worried about numbers than a good strong engine?

I rebuilt the SB in my 73, if/when do it again it'll be a 383. Not worth the time, work, and money unless you have a NCRS car.

if it was me and i could do it over again i would have reused my old block instead of buying a brand new GMPP block and just had my old one cleaned checked and any machining done but instead i have a new block in the car and now my matching numbers block is taking up space in the corner of my garage oh well i guess you have to live and learn like i said before its whats inside the engine that counts

What's your goal?

- Numbers matching: keep it original
