Matching numbers or dependable engine?

Matching numbers or dependable engine?
I realize matching numbers are important, especially for a 69 or so vette. But for an 81 would it matter to get a good dependable running engine or to rebuild the one in my car? Are people more worried about numbers than a good strong engine?

if it was me and i could do it over again i would have reused my old block instead of buying a brand new GMPP block and just had my old one cleaned checked and any machining done but instead i have a new block in the car and now my matching numbers block is taking up space in the corner of my garage 
oh well i guess you have to live and learn 
like i said before its whats inside the engine that counts
