Default windshield trim on my '79

OK... now that my interior is out I guess it's a good time to get the windshield replaced. One of the local glass companies quoted me $250 and they'll do it at my house/in my garage....
The windshield trim is not included in the $250. Should it be included ? Does it usually have to be replaced ? Will it break anyways when the windshield is removed ??

I plan on taking the glass out myself so that I have time to repair the frame as needed (if needed).... the glass guys will then only install the new glass.

I guess I should just get the new trim, preferred in black vs. SS/chrome...... where to buy and how much is that trim ?? I can't find it in my catalogs

Why would you need to replace the trim? Is there something wrong with it? The trim should come off fairly easy, no need to brake it. I took trim off my 79 and removed the windshield. Everything came apart nicely, nothing broke.

Default Sounds about right.

I just did mine. I took out the old windsheild and did a little clean up. They came to my house and installed. $250 is what I paid. And they actually did it twice, as after they installed it, they noticed small scratch and went back to shop got a new and replace it. I took advantage of having trim off and buffed it out. Looks great. Amazing what a little buffing will do for 35 year old trim, looked new.

Good luck, it's amazing much brighter it is to see through a new windshield.

So the trim can be removed without breaking it..... that's good news. I'll search the archives, maybe I can find a installation guide....

I had my local glass service stop over to just remove the windshield for $70 and included was the reinstallation. They allowed 6 months for the reinstallation and to do any work I wanted. If your local glass service doesn't offer this time gap, you might negotiate it into a service contract.

Red69, I asked them (safelite) if they would do that and they said yes but I'd have to pay extra (2 trips) ... they said that to them it doesn't matter if I took the glass out. Hmmm.... Maybe they prefer me to remove it so they are not at risk breaking the trim

I found very good information using the search function (25 page document with photos) but it covers installation only... it doesn't show how to remove the trim.

Red, after you remove the side pillar trim ( 2 peice 3 phillips includes the weatherstrip) the top trim is not held in place with any screws, slowly pull straight up working both sides so you dont bend it. To remove the glass use piano or gutuar wire. Slide the wire through a small hole that you make in the seal , then wrap a small block of wood around each end and cut thru this seal using a sawing motion, works good with 2 people. Any way to answer your question If you want black trim , the bedding compound is the black hard /soft stuff comes clean with paint thinner or most solvents. Then clean with a strong detergent, scuff sand the surface (follow the primer label) rattle can acid etch primer , then a low lusture black finish. The window frame should taken to bare steel then treated ( I would suggest por-15 black mouisture cure urethane 1 part brushed on) or your prefference , just dont use any paint that will fail ,thus loosing your seal. The glass guys should reinstall your trim at that price and they will make the trim flush to glass. One more thing put your dash in before they come ist a lot easier to not damage the ends. hope this helps, murray

Thanks
I just placed the order for the POR15 starter kit, they claim it's good for 12 sqf - that should get this job done.
