Have a new battery, and a one year old alternator. The car has had a starting issue after a trip of 50 miles 2 seperate times now its in the garage and wont start at all. Radio lights work. Hear a click in engine compartment when I turn key,and guage dips down. Any ideas and
how hard to replace a starter not much of a mechanic. Thanks
Starter is easy to replace, should be a two-beer job tops. Search the C3 section for "Heat Soak" you'll get some ideas why starters go bad, maybe make your new starter decision for you (mini-starter, remote solenoid, heat insulator etc).

More to the story put charger on this am and it sarted. When new battery was installed connectors where bad thats when the first incident occured, then they where replaced, is it possible battery was just drained or is it my alternator .
I had this problem a month ago and replaced three starters until I replaced my BRAND NEW battery with a neighbor's WalMArt battery.
Problem went away and my car started every time, hot or cold. So I just purchased a new AC Delco 7 year and no more starting problems. Everyone tried to blame heat soak which is why I replaced three starters, and it was the new battery all along. Alternator and everything on the car is new including the positive and negative wires as I just restored the entire car over the last 10 years.
I did not expect a brand new battery I paid $200 for to be bad but whenb I had it tested it was only at 60% after being on a charger all night long. No more restoration batteries for me.

Just went thru this cycle on two cars. The first did turn out to be a bad starter. The second, yesterday, month old battery was bad. I'm going to keep my eye on electrical issues to see why the battery went bad so quickly. Hopefully it was just a bad battery.
Ditto ksbunting on the WalMart battery. After completing the muncie swap on mine last April my battery was weak (bought new from Kragen three years ago). After a two-day chartge car started OK when cold but starter dragged real bad when hot. Put the biggest ($62) battery WalMart made in it- it sits for a week or two at a time now without being started but when I turn the key it cranks fast cold OR hot with no problems. WalMart may still be the Evil Chinese Scourge but they do sell a good battery!

At least 75% of the time or more, this is the main problem and solution to hard starts. Unfortunately most amatures want to crawl under a car and take the starter off with the idea that a starter wont work when it gets hot. {heat soak}. There really isn`t any such issue. Big heavy OEM starters, mini starters, or anything else, they all get HOT whether working or not as long as the engine is running. And only a "good battery" will solve the problem. Plus you dont have to crawl under the car to fix it.

Well I charged the battery and put on a new starter. It cranks quick now but time will tell if that was the problem need a long ride Thanks for your suggestions

The reason this amateur changed the starter is because several members on this forum said it was definitely heat soak and the starter needs to be replaced since the battery was NEW. We amateurs expect BRAND NEW batteries that cost $200 to be able to start a car.

Agree with you on the battery..but I once experienced no starts occasionally after a drive, and it turned out to be the solenoid spring..(always started cold) After the new spring was installed..it never happened again..think there is a fine line here on symtoms and what actually is the issue sometimes..
