Default Build Sheet Decoded

I have a 1968 C3, and the build sheet shows it was shipped to Zone 18, Dealer number 447. Does someone know where that dealer is, or a site that has reference info?

Thanks.

Interesting enough...there are three dealers with dealer number 447 located in PA, MI and Unknown. The ncrs.org website maintains a database of dealer codes and permits owners to enter information. You can read about where the codes came from (like your build sheet). Now the zone numbers for the two dealers differ than what you show...19 and 13. If you plug in 18...its the state of Iowa.

Great info, as always, thank you.

The build sheet is pretty rough, so what looked like 18 is probably 13.

If a dealer goes out of business maybe GM gives the old zone # to a new dealer?

The Zones remained "the zones", although they were combined with others over the years.

The dealers within each Zone were assigned a number. I believe these were originally assigned alphabetically, so within Zone 13, Dealer #001 might be Aardvark Chevrolet. Dealer 002 might be Baker Chevrolet and so on.

BUT, if a dealership was sold, lets say Aardvark Chevrolet, Zone 13, dealer 001, was sold to Zebra Chevrolet, it would STILL be dealer 001.

Also, don't forget that there were dealers #1-200-300 within EACH Zone.

I remember that in 78, when the Pace Cars came out, GM made about 6,600 of them, one for every dealer in the US and Canada. There were probably a lot more than 6,600 dealers back in the 50's and 60's. Chuck

Here's a pic/scan of zones. Tough to read in the smaller format.

Click in the lower corner and you can expand the pic. Chuck
