Antique Tags or not in Virginia
Anyone have any advise on using Antique Tags or going to the normal everyday tags? Inspection not an issue. Thoughts?:o

I bought mine off Ebay and then took them to the DMV (Virginia) and registered them. They are original 1970 black and white plates. I registered it as an antique show car, so no inspection, no annual tax, etc. The website details how you are allowed to drive it, etc.

HI Silver,
Va restricts you to 1500 miles per year with antique tags. I'm not sure how they would enforce it on a car with an uncertified odometer but I chose not to chance it since there was no emissions inspection on normal tags.
I may change at some point tho cause I hate those stickers!

I registered mine as an antique in VA, but I am not aware of any 1500 mile restriction. The DMV site never indicated that, nor does the law seem to say it anywhere: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp...0+cod+46.2-730
The main things are:
D. Except as provided in subsection E of this section, motor vehicles and trailers registered with license plates issued under this section shall not be used for general transportation purposes, including, but not limited to, daily travel to and from the owner's place of employment, but shall only be used:
1. For participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar events; and
2. On the highways of the Commonwealth for the purpose of testing their operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, transportation to and from events as described in subdivision 1 of this subsection, and for occasional pleasure driving not exceeding 250 miles from the residence of the owner.
Mine hasn't really moved under it's own power since I registered it...

I think we may go with the NONE Antique reg for now. John wants to drive this more often then the law seems to allow and who wants to get caught up in that mess if you can help it. The "tax" is low I think only $45 for a car with this mileage so no big deal there.
NOW we just have to pick tag (personal) that we agree on. I have "his" Vietnam Vet tag on my 97 (long story there) that I will transfer to HIS 73 and get a new one for my 97. Let the play on words begin!!!

It appears the law may have just changed July 1.
I can't find anything concrete on the changes, but there is much discussion about it in this thread.

Either way, the info I got from the DMV clerk was obviously incorrect.

Sorry to hear about DMV troubles..hopefully it's just a clerical thing. I ahd to go research the antigue tag laws
Notwithstanding the provisions of §§ 46.2-711 and 46.2-715, antique motor vehicles may display single license plates if the original manufacturer's design of the antique motor vehicles allows for the use of only single license plates or if the license plate was originally issued in one of the following years and is displayed in accordance with the provisions of subsection B of this section: 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1945, or 1946.
Translation: A 1973 Corvette with no front tag bracket and a factory center grill comply's to; "the original manufacturer's design of the antique motor vehicles allows for the use of only single license plates or if the license plate"
Except as provided in subsection E of this section, motor vehicles and trailers registered with license plates issued under this section shall not be used for general transportation purposes, including, but not limited to, daily travel to and from the owner's place of employment.
Translation: You can't drive it to work everyday..or at least you can't get caught.
On the highways of the Commonwealth for the purpose of testing their operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, transportation to and from events as described in subdivision 1 of this subsection, and for occasional pleasure driving not exceeding 250 miles from the residence of the owner.
Translation: You can't take it more than 250 miles from home, but on any given day can venture as far as 250miles, for any reason.
The physical condition of the vehicle's license plate or plates has been inspected and approved by the Department;
Translation: You can still get an old Va tag and get it inspected and approved as AirTrafficController did.
Other interesting items;
The owner of the vehicle periodically registers the vehicle with the Department and pays a registration fee for the vehicle equal to that which would be charged to obtain regular state license plates for that vehicle;
4. The vehicle passes a periodic safety inspection as provided in Article 21 (§ 46.2-1157 et seq.) of Chapter 10 of this title;
These may be new....I always heard no safety inspection required...

I keep regular tags on the Vet as I want to keep my Go-Gone plate. I do have a vintage tag on my 65 Mustang and drive it regularly on weekends and such. I have never been hassled or even stoped and questioned about my driving. Pretty much use the car as if it had regular plates on the weekend.

I have regular tags on my 73. There is no tax assessment on the car due to age, just pay for the sticker.
My main reason for this is for the personalized tag
MACH FIV on the Autumn style tags!

One Year Short
I'm one model year short of antique tagging my 82 CE in Virginia.
It's not going to be my daily driver and the restrictions allow me to do all the stuff I want/have to do: occasional drive for pleasure, to the shop (Ugh!), to Corvette meetings and shows, and to work on "drive your Vette to work Friday".
Plus, at this point it keeps me from the ordeal of the dreaded emissions inspection.
All in all if this isn't your primary car, antiquing is the way to go.

Bluedog, I met some folks at the Leesburg Cruise-In on June 10 who I think had an 82 CE. Was that you?
BTW, the Old Dominion Corvette Club is having a Vette Cruise-in this sunday at Sterling Chevrolet if your interested. I live in Purcellville and plan to go provided I get my carb fixed in time.

Mine is an '80 model. I just got regular tags and insurance so I can drive her whenever I want, with no concerns. I've put over 24,000 miles on her and she now has around 43,000 in total, on the odometer. And I've owned her a little less than 4 years.
Drive her - she likes it.

Safety Car
I'll wait till my car's exhaust fails inspection. Then I'll get antique tags and dual exhaust.

I run YOM, year of manufacturer tags on my 1973 Corvette. It is treated the same as an antique tag.
The General Assembly was trying to add some type of inspection to antique tags this year. Never heard the outcome. Their claim was that too many people were using the antique plates on their daily drivers and the cars were old and unsafe. Typical government stuff - add another law because they are too lazy to enforce the ones on the books.
