trying to align my steering wheel exactly so it is centered. it was slightly to one side, so took the steering wheel off and moved it over one gear. Now it is slightly off-center the other way. Is there an adjustment on the steering box to make a slight adjustment??

Take it to a shop and have it aligned. That will center your wheel.
But first...
Now that you've moved the wheel on the shaft, you'll have to make sure you re-index it properly. Your steering box has its own "center" and you want your steering wheel aligned with that before your front wheels are aligned to the steering wheel.
Look at the top of the threaded steering shaft. There will be an index mark that should be straight up and down when the steering box is centered. Get that mark straight up then put your steering wheel back on straight. THEN adjust your tie rod ends to get the car to track straight to the steering wheel.
