Default Tank Sticker

i heard that there was originally a sticker place on the gas tank by the company that tells all the information about the car, like the accessories and stuff. where exactly is this located? do i have to drop the tank in order to get to it?

To remove the sticker, yes you have to drop the tank first.
But look at the top of the tank through the filler opening first or use small mirror and flashlight from underneath.
IIRC it will be on the RH side of the neck. But I'm old and getting fergitful.

i just tried looking from the top and i couldn't see anything. it didn't even look like there was a surface to place a sticker. when i removed the rubber stopper, there was like a bolted plate around the whole area for the tank inlet.

I pulled mine out last week by laying at the back of the car and reaching my hand up on top of the gas tank. It was on the passenger side of the fill. Mine was laying loose(at least half of it). The bottom half is still up there as I can feel it but it is attached. I'm letting it there.

so it's actually right on the edge of the passenger side, on the top of the tank? i'll try to stick my head right up in there and see what i can find.

sorry for bothering you again wolfehunter.
there is like a metal shield around my tank on the top and i can't even reach in there. i'm wondering if i do have to drop the tank. was this shield already taken off your vette so you could reach above there?

so i just finished taking out the driver's bucket seat, and found nothing. geez...what a waste of time. i gotta figure something else out.
i can eliminate the area underneath the seat, and possibly the gas tank. i'll find out for sure about that on saturday when i drop it.
where else were the build sheets located on the '77 vettes?

I found mine on the driver's side. Apparently the tank always got stuck onto the tank before it was mounted and that was the last thing to be installed on the car before it was rolled out for final detail. I think that job was performed by a lot of people so the location can be different for everyone. My vette had a sidepipe conversion done so the exhaust wasn't in the way. I don't think anyone can snake their hand up over the tank to get to the paper if the exhaust is there.

I found my tank paper when I was working on my differential since I pulled my spare tire carrier at that time and a corner of the paper was sticking out. The paper is glued to the top of the tank, so be careful that you don't rip it getting it off...mine came off easily and I suspect that if it wasn't a 40,000 mile vette that paper would have been long gone as it appeared to be pulling away from the tank on its own. So, if you want to be careful about riping it then you might want to drop the tank especially if the exhaust is still there.

I own a '77 vette and so does my dad, we've had both the original tanks out in the past with no sign of any build sheets.

it sounds to me like none of the '77 vettes had tank stickers, but i have heard that other '77s had build sheet under the carpet, inside the frame, inside the dash by the speedo and tach, etc. i guess i'll just keep on looking.

on my 82 the tank sticker is still on the tank. Remove the spare tire carrier. lay on your back under the rear of the car. Look on the verticle forward most portion of the gas tank and if your tank sticker is still there you will see the bottom portion of it hanging down.

Mine is a 71 but I had assumed they continued putting them on through 77. I'm not familiar with a 77's gas tank but I could reach right up around the outside of my tank and feel the tank sheet up on top of the tank.

Build Sheets

Hey Rock n roll...what year is your vette?
It's a 75 with 69 style sidepipes and an aftermarket metalic green which matches the C4 metalic green...had a guy pull up next to me and comment that the color didn't change. I had to break it to him that mine was a custom paint job.

For the record...all Corvettes have build sheets and from 67 thru 82 they were glued to the tank.

I have a 77 and I was disappointed not finding the build sheet on the gas tank. When I stripped out my interior I found my build sheet under the drivers seat under the insulation next to the floor board. Dont give up hope on those stickers.

I think most tank stickers fall off and get blown away. Sad to think that most tank stickers wound up as refuse along the highways.

For Corvettes beginning with the 1977 model year, the Allied Vaughn GM Media Archives Center at Livonia, MI may have microfiche records of dealer invoices. Go to the Corvette Action Center website, click on Education > Owner Research > General Search Informatiion and follow the directions. They will want your VIN and your credit card number. If they find the dealer invoice for your Corvette in their records, the charge is $50 for a copy. I was able to obtain the dealer invoice for my 1980 L-82 from Allied Vaughn.

It's worth the $50.

When I pulled the body off my '73, the sticker was glued to the gas tank. Then, when I pulled the dash apart, another identical sheet (in better shape) was found on the driver's side above the speedo.
